    It could be worse ...

I find it mad that if none of the officials spotted it, they're willing to use a TV spectator as a reason to go back and look at it again. Either the officials spot it or they don't. If they don't, they can't punish it a day later because someone else did.

    First Ever Fixture

When I did my course my instructor always said 'If you're going to get it wrong, get it wrong with 100% confidence!' which has always stuck with me as solid advice for whatever game you're doing. You will make mistakes. Don't dwell on them, and good luck!

    OOps Mr Moyes!!!

Joke or not, really stupid thing of him to say and right that he's apologised.

    First red card!

Well done, it is nice to have an easy one as the first. The thing to focus on for future ones is the process. I know with my first one I was so panicked that it was my first one I totally messed up the process. I didn't make him go to the changing rooms, and I showed the card before I'd taken...

    Goal celebration

I think you're selectively quoting my response to two different specific incidents ;) Though I do take the point about not resorting to cards unless necessary, though it would be interesting if any of the observers on here would comment about whether in the 'disallowed goal/removal of shirt'...

    Goal celebration

All I've ever said is removing your shirt is not a caution in and of itself, except if done when celebrating a goal. From the clip that was posted it doesn't appear that the player has done anything else to justify a yellow card, so if the card is simply because he has removed his shirt and...

    Goal celebration

No, because that would be covered by other laws like OFFINABUS, dissent etc. Likewise, 'climbing on a perimeter fence' would be covered under leaving the field without permission if they did it at any other time (however odd that might be!) There isn't any other law that covers removing the...

    Goal celebration

I could get on board with delaying the restart if he was walking slowly, but he was actually jogging which isn't something you see from subs. And the fact that he was basically on the touchline when he got the caution tells you everything you need to know. Really poor refereeing IMO!

    Goal celebration

That's really interesting. Not sure if the laws have been altered, but I've just checked and the only place that removing the shirt is listed as a cautionable offence (or an offence at all!) is directly in the section about celebrating a goal. I've put the full section below, but I don't think...

    Manager refuses to shake hand

I've long stopped caring about who shakes my hand or doesn't at the end of a game. Some players/managers will be as polite as anything, even if you've given several controversial things against them during the game. Others will use the slightest excuse to decide you're the worst ref ever. It's...

    Goal celebration

No. The removal of the shirt is only a cautionable offence in the context of celebrating a goal.

    Goal celebration

Yeah, goal celebration is under unsporting behaviour and the LOTG set out four (I think!) specific things that qualify. I wouldn't be overly apologetic about it really. The world and his wife know it's a yellow card. I had a guy a few weeks ago score his first goal for his club and swing his...

    Goal celebration

    Yep, 100%.

The Removal of Players after Injuries

If you've done all the stuff listed below and find yourself with some time, then just use it to warm up. The teams will know you're taking it seriously if they see you stretching and doing some running! Obviously you should do all the normal stuff, like get and check match balls, check nets...

At what age group does coaching become cards?

It's a context thing for me. There isn't a particular age when it moves from coaching to cards, but more a view of the type of incident. As @SurreySuperRef says, a yellow card for entering the field of play without permission for a ten year old would be inappropriate, but if they punched someone...

    Offside incident

It's really poor form to undermine a fellow official like that, especially if they are a NAR. Every time I've been a NAR with a higher level ref, they have all said in their pre-match that offsides are all mine and they'll only intervene if there is a spectacularly good reason, like I've fallen...

First Assessment of new marking season

Interestingly he said it wasn't something I did when giving fouls, but when I was whistling to restart play. It's something I'm going to work on some more to try and get rid of from my game!

First Assessment of new marking season

I think elements of presentation that aren't strictly in the LOTG are totally fair game when it comes to observation. My last observer pointed that I tend to tilt my head down when I whistle, and that meant I didn't look as confident when doing so. Nowhere in the LOTG does it say where to look...

    Offside incident

Yep, that's sound advice! Was just one of those ones that I was replaying in my head.

New Ref- some fairly basic tips

Think about the scenario you describe as a tackle. Two players going for the ball, one gets their first and then gets clattered by the other one. That's a foul, regardless of how likely a collision was, or whether they were both genuinely trying to get there. Now you can get into the discussion...
