I was on the line to a referee in the Allied Counties U18 league last week. He cautioned a lad for a very late tackle with about 10 minutes to go. As the player walked away from him after the caution he waved his arm in the air and said, " That's an effing joke ref!" so my colleague cautioned...
The sock tape law is the most ridiculous, unwanted, un-necessary law in the book and is a complete pain in the neck. The sooner it is taken out of the laws the better.
My assessor told me he would have dismissed for DOGSO-H based on the angle he had, but I was correct in law given the explanation I gave him after the game (phew). Another former referee was watching the game, and he also said red card, so I could easily have sold it.
I Quote from OP

I think me and the assessor both said he got it right ! And yes you can tell if a ball will be going in the goal or not if it is (as he said in the OP) going well wide !
If you can see that the ball clearly isn't going in, it can't be 'DOGh' and if it isn't going to a team mate it can't be 'DOGSOh' so it sounds like the call was spot on. You shouldn't send a player off because you can sell it! Apply the laws !
In my game yesterday a player said, 'Feck off reff' very early on. I called him in with his captain and loud enough for all to hear told him it was not acceptable and the next one from anyone would lead to a card. Didn't happen again !
Was the offending player closer than two metres, if not no offence. Had the ball crossed the touchline before it hit him, if it had and he was within the two metres then you were correct with the free kick.
You are all missing the point here. We do not need to change the laws, just the mind set. The law is there and is quite clear, dissent by word or action is a cautionable offence. Unfortunately for whatever reason, dissent has crept in as being 'part of the game', the same as grappling and...

Until they do something at the top level and cut out the language that is clearly used in Premier league games, often at the referee, for all to see on TV this, in my opinion is a complete waste of time!
