    Juan Mata FK... Offside?

I don't think they have. They have said that when Mata shot, the players were in an offside position and were at that point interfering with the ability of an opponent to play the ball. If Mata had not shot there would have been no offside; if the players had made it back past the second last...

    Juan Mata FK... Offside?

Thanks for posting that, very interesting. I am not 100% convinced that "as the free kick is taken, MNU35, MNU21 and MNU9 all make a clear movement (obvious action), which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball" but as I posted earlier, I think there was enough of doubt...

    Juan Mata FK... Offside?

The referee doesn't know what will happen before and immediately after the kick is taken. For example, if Mata had squared the ball rather than taking a shot and all three players had retreated beyond the second last defender before any shot on goal was taken there would be no discussion about...

    Juan Mata FK... Offside?

Because being in an offside position, unlike holding, is not an offence in itself; the referee has no way of knowing where the players are going to be when the shot is taken and there is nothing in law to stop them being wherever they like on the FOP.

    Fixture cramming

Usually between two pitches so no football is played on the square.

    Where to Stand ??

Indeed - doesn't need to even be a particularly high level. I refereed an U15 game in a Respect league on this pitch a few weeks ago. As you can see, not only is there a barrier behind the goal, there is a stand! Should I let spectators stand behind the barrier behind the goal? Should I let...

    Juan Mata FK... Offside?

The angle of the picture above makes it look as if they are off to the right but in reality, 35 is very close to being directly between the keeper and the ball. Don't think that necessarily makes it offside but certainly not clearly on.

This certainly seems to indicate that you hadn't cautioned in the first half. How many did you caution for dissent in the first half? Or were you managing the players rather than applying the laws?

Open Age First red of the season...

Why's that? You have written yourself that the players were bitching and moaning about every decision (or else how could they continue to do so) and yet you failed to caution. Sounds like a clear case of refereeing for club marks to me.

Shouting leave it! (And a little question)

Really? I have refereed for 10 years and in that time I have cautioned twice for this, once when a player shouted "bang" as his opponent was about to shoot, and once, when a defender screamed his own name every time he challenged for a header; I let the first one go as there was just a...

Open Age First red of the season...

So, you had a first half where the players bitched and moaned about every decision (aka dissent) and you cautioned no-one? Sounds like refereeing to be popular to me...

    Flamini's tackle

Yes, and it is still also reckless...

    Flamini's tackle

Ohhh, yes they can! From the LOTG: “Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent. • A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned “Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessary...

    10 yards

I am fairly short so actually always take 11 paces. If anyone anyone moans about it being more than 10 yards I just tell them that the LOTG is now metric and that I have just paced out 9.15m rather than 10 yards.

Man City vs Everton (CO Cup)

So to sum up, player says " you're a useless referee,"and ref says, "and you're a useless defender", and it is the ref who is "arrogant" and "dickish"?

Man City vs Everton (CO Cup)

The quote from Jagielka is: "I tried to speak to him about it but he just told me our defending was brilliant. It is difficult when things start going the wrong way and they become a little bit arrogant, but unfortunately this is the way it goes." Translated: "I went to scream and shout at the...
