    Big line

It could be the youth combination, U18's. Those are the Tier 2 Academies and they have a L4 in the middle and levels 5-7 on the line. I did one last season with a L7 who had only ever run 3 lines in his career!

    Low Card Count

There's 3 potential answers here: 1) You've not had games where you've needed to use your cards (as others have said, in youth football, especially at younger ages, you're unlikely to have too many, as you get to older age groups, the likelihood goes up) 2) You're struggling to differentiate...

Open Age A slight phantom goal issue

One of the key things I always tell newer referees and AR's when they cross my path is that "you have far more time than you think to make a decision" Take your time, buy yourself that extra second or so of time to compute and then give the decision.

    Incident at Bridgend apparently.

Yeah I'm fine thanks. Not going to let one individual ruin my enjoyment of spoiling other peoples Saturday afternoons!

    Incident at Bridgend apparently.

Horrible! I came as close to being assaulted today by a player as I've ever been and it wasn't a pleasant experience. The flip side was the reaction and the response from the other 21 players and the management team which was actually quite heart warming. An evening of report writing is the...

    Yellow for a DOGSO

yeah good point. It's ok to give a quick explanation, but when they what to come back with "but what about..." then it's turning into a debate, not an explanation and that's where you have to nip it in the bud.

    Stay safe everyone.

Primary consideration is player safety. Is there is a risk that stuff could get blown down onto the pitch and the players that jeopardises their safety, whether that be trees, parts of stands etc. That's the major factor at play here. If you believe there is a risk based on the conditions...

    Witty responses

One of the good ones when a player says "that's terrible, ref" either in the game or at the post match handshake is to reply "don't be so harsh on yourself, you weren't that bad!"

    Yellow for a DOGSO

It's not easy especially when you are a young referee as a lot of the 'soft skills' come with life experience. Practically I think there's a few things that you can do to develop: 1) Self awareness and self honesty on decisions you've got wrong and the root causes. You don't need to proclaim...

    5-4 first report

Now that's embarrassing that I forgot that! 😳😳

    Yellow for a DOGSO

What if the winning team miss out on winning the league by 1 goal or the losing team don't get relegated on goal difference? The hard part of being a referee is applying law in challenging circumstances. It could be a player you've built a rapport with, or a really one sided game but the...

    Craziest Appeal You’ve Seen

Doing a low level OA game not too long after I'd qualified. Team makes a sub, so I head over to do the equipment check and do the sub. Check the guys kit, no issues (he's wearing a long sleeved shirt) so he steps into the FOP completing the substitution. He then pulls his sleeves up and on his...

    5-4 first report

It's not necessarily needed to have a mad crazy game certainly at 5-4 to get a good mark. But what you need to do is do the basics REALLY WELL to stand out on those areas. My highest mark at 5-4 was a 75 and I got that in a game that finished 9-0, with the losing keeper getting MOTM!

    5-4 first report

5-4 I had only one of my 5 observations with neutrals and that was my last one which was a Step 6 middle.

    New ref at 59!

Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of refereeing! I see @Ross has liked your post, he may have some copies of the LOTG kicking around 😉

    Coventry vs Birmingham

There is a fine line between being "brave" and being "caught out" in situations like this. If his decision is supported by the powers that be, then great, if it's overturned on appeal then (rightly or wrongly) he's incorrect. If he continues to send off for this type of challenge if he's...

    Coventry vs Birmingham

I agree entirely. I've got a nagging feeling that the cars will be appealed and the sending off overturned though, which sends a message that "it's just a caution"

    Coventry vs Birmingham

There was a very similar one in the Forest v Luton game last night. Luton defender has taken out the Forest attacker down the left wing. The issue here is that whilst a red is very supportable in both cases, vast majority of referees will go yellow on both challenges, meaning that...

    2 soft yellows?

Consistency is critical as you progress. Teams won't necessarily get consistency week to week, but during the course of the game are in charge of you as the referee need to show consistency to both teams. We've all had the really irritating player that you're looking for an excuse to card...
