    Utd v villa

Spot on, he should have delayed the whistle in this instance. However, given that his on field decision would still have been no goal, the lack of evidence proving this to be an error would still have ended up with the same outcome in any case

    Players constant moaning

I’ve already agreed with you on this point. And the example being driven from the top on areas like time wasting, delaying the restart and (to some extent) dissent is already markedly more helpful than a few years back. However the fair question to ask is still whether the actions / choices of...

    Players constant moaning

You’re correct. However, quite rightly, the primary responsibility of top level officials is to appropriately deliver a massive budget entertainment spectacle … not necessarily to do what is best for grassroots officials.

    Palace v Man City FAC

In general, I agree that number one is the least worst option. However, I believe differentiation should be made between (potential) KMI incidents actually seen by the on field officials and those completely missed. In the latter cases, I’d set a much lower bar for VAR intervention, in order...

    Palace v Man City FAC

Match officials for this match appointed by the FA not PGMOL …..

    Palace v Man City FAC

I think my question on this type of incident remains, why does it make sense for an unusual situation like this one to need to be that obviously wrong in order to be referred for a second viewing by the on field referee? Stuart Attwell deserves the chance to decide for himself for the first time...

    Palace v Man City FAC

I think we can all agree that the on field officials did not see / have confidence to give the handball offense (either because they believed it was instead played by Haaland or because they believed Henderson was in the area). But that the VAR video evidence factually showed a handball offense...

    Palace v Man City FAC

If we go back to first principles, the VAR protocol is set up as it is in order to ensure that the on field referee remains the final arbiter and that we don’t end up re-refereeing for purely subjective decisions. In situations like these, where the on field team have clearly completely missed...

    Palace v Man City FAC

There are a number of areas where the football laws can / could learn from Futsal. With regard to DOGSO, the number one consideration in Futsal is whether or not the goal is ‘guarded’ by the keeper. This makes total sense, as it’s the biggest driver of whether any goal scoring opportunity is...

    Bristol City v Sheff Utd

I think you're right at higher levels. However at grassroots I've now experienced nailed on examples of the above in three separate countries (England, Denmark & New Zealand) so I've either been extremely unlucky or it's simply a case of slow, aging centre halves being unintentionally clumsy! :)

Throw ins- how far can the player get?

Certainly one good, viable approach. An alternative, especially at grassroots levels, if you've CLEARLY told the player not to push their luck and they choose to ignore you, is simply reversing the throw in ... certainly sends out a clear message that is likely to have the desired effect for...

    Bristol City v Sheff Utd

Which is what makes it somewhat surprising that in the considerations we are asked to use (the three D's and a C) there is no room for the other C .. Cynical. We have ended up in a situation where some fairly cynical challenges in the penalty area might get downgraded to a YC because of a...

    Promotion dates L4 and above

As others have said, not an assessment day but for those whose nominations are accepted, an induction day. Worth not stuffing up on that day though, as there's always the chance that they might change their mind!

    lvl 7 - lvl 1

Having been involved in different capacities (Observer, Match Official, Promotion Co-Ordinator) across a wide range of promotion levels (Level 7 up to National List), I'm firmly of the opinion that the only level which struggles to be 'fit for purpose' is Level 4. Here's the thinking: 7 to 5...

    lvl 7 - lvl 1

Historically (in most counties) you could only progress one level per season. Recent changes to the scheme have been, in part, designed to make progression potentially swifter and more fluid. These days, with significant talent, dedication and a large slice of luck, you could potentially go...

    Worcester City Vs Corby

Attackers are not allowed to challenge the GK when they have possession of the ball. So any contact, even if not reaching the normal foul threshold, should be penalized

    IDFK & handball

Penalty and YC for me. Unless, of course, it hits another body part first, in which case RC. More amusing would be if the handball failed to stop the ball going into the goal and actually led to a goal being scored 😊

    BHA v LEI

On the first, given that he doesn't "turn down" the appeal (cut the grass etc), safe to assume that he's just unsighted .. so exactly the kind of situation where VAR can and should help. On the second, the EPL threshold for when holding becomes an offence has been set fairly high (especially in...

    Violent Conduct

Happy to agree to disagree on the Beckham situation. At the time, no one was surprised by the red card .. but these days I believe football (especially at higher levels) would now expect a YC. You have totally persuaded me that using CRUEF for off the ball kicks is not incorrect 😊. However, I...

    Violent Conduct

Totally understand the perspective. So, using Beckham as an example (where everyone now cites this as a nailed on YC), do you genuinely believe it’s credible to see this ‘kick’ as Reckless?
