    Additional Time

As a general observation / reminder, when an additional board time is shown at the end of each half, the time indicated can (justifiably) be 59 seconds less than the referee intends to play. Whilst 'rounding up' might seem simpler (and it certainly happens on occasion) , with both teams able...

    Grimsby vs Gillingham

EFL appointments are done the Monday before the games. So after (assuming the Grimsby game was in a Saturday)

    PSV v Napoli OFFINABUS

It's a good example of higher level referees feeling (more) empowered to take strong action against player behaviour when it is more visual and therefore clearer to everyone. It might have been the words used but the referee's body language suggests that the red card was for the overt gesturing...

    Palace DOGSO

Overall, I feel this is a great clip to illustrate a slight gap in our overall DOGSO approach. Whilst it's an inexact and significantly oversimplified view of the OP, the overall question in my mind is whether a shot at (a guarded) goal from at / near the "apex point" of the penalty area (ie...

SFP every day of the week and twice on Saturday :)

    Grimsby vs Gillingham

The four DOGSO considerations don't need to be met. They need to be, as the name suggests, considered in reaching a holistic view as to whether an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity has been denied. It's entirely possible (though highly unusual) for DOGSO to be the outcome, even if one or more...

    Grimsby vs Gillingham

I’d see the safest / best decision here as a defensive free kick for the original challenge. If you choose not to give that, then at the moment of the foul on the attacker, there’s no covering defender in shot. I’d see it as touch and go whether that nearest defender could get back and impact...

Ref halts game for 10 mins for spectator abuse to assistant

In a world of paying spectators, I’d entirely expect negative / unfavourable comments to be coming in the direction of both match officials AND players (usually, but not always, opposition players!). I see no reason why match officials should get any greater protection than the players do in...

    Wales v Belgium Handball

Think this is a helpful elaboration. Interestingly, I think a great deal of the subjectivity regarding natural / justifiable comes from differing philosophical start points … UEFA seem to start from ‘it’s a handball offence unless you’ve clearly done everything possible to avoid the ball...

    Wales v Belgium Handball

One quarter 🇲🇹, three quarters 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 , and with a leaning towards 🇩🇰 and 🇳🇿 having lived in both countries. 0% 🐉

    Wales v Belgium Handball

Overall, I firmly disagree, despite agreeing with most of what you say 😊. The ball absolutely hit the arm and the arm was clearly ‘away from the body’. However, the arm position felt entirely natural to me and totally justified by the body movement being undertaken. For anyone who views it...

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

Hmmm. Helpfully ‘possession’ is not even defined in the Glossary of the Laws. So, in that case, happy to go with your view, as it more closely aligns with the regular meaning of the word (outside of demonic contexts 👹)

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

Given that the team ‘in possession’ is the team that last touched the ball, then I think a deflection off the opposing team (ie a change in possession) would be justification for stopping the game and giving a drop ball?

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

Think I prefer the pithier summary from @CaptainsPlease 😊. The additional reason for stopping play could be if the referee was incapacitated after being struck by the ball (not mandated immediately but certainly possible!). There is also (theoretically) the possibility of a corner kick at the...

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

If a player manages to hit me ‘in my penalty area’ on a cold winter’s morning, then fair play to them! 😳🙈

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

That’s a great starter for ten (especially with the edits 😉). And hopefully well illustrates the point I was aiming to make. I’d maybe add one additional reason for stopping play in the first place and add in one, admittedly incredibly unlikely, additional restart ..

Changed drop ball law … devil in the detail

I’m far from convinced about this year’s revision to the drop ball law .. as ever, well intentioned, but opens up the possibility for confusion / surprising outcomes. As it’s a quiet week, anyone care to list the possible ways for play to proceed in the following straightforward and entirely...

    Brentford v Manchester City

The GK 8 second introduction is relatively straightforward, as it’s a ‘one off’ with the ball in play. Setting a time limit for any one actual restart would likely be a precursor to a Futsal style mandatory count at ALL restarts. You can certainly argue the merits of this but there’s no...

Second yellow even though he got the ball

It sounds from the description like he was fortunate to get a second yellow rather than a straight red! He should be happy … 🤣
