    Offside decision

Loads. Most typically at corners where there are defender(s) on the posts and the keeper comes to try and claim the ball

    Captain's Only

Email received from FA just now. They must have been monitoring Refchat ….

    keeper DOGSO today

The three criteria we have been asked to apply when deciding on DTR are Clear, Deliberate and Impactful. It sounds like this met the first two but not the third (because, as others have said, likely the referee has decided, correctly or incorrectly that it’s on his whistle).

    failed by a fraction!

An extra 0.5 will make a very material difference. It’s not designed to ‘cull’ more candidates but is a reflection of growing competition for places at Level 4 and a desire for those reaching that level to genuinely hit the ground running and ideally have the potential to progress to Level 3...

    failed by a fraction!

This season, I believe around 70 of the 240 who met ALL the criteria were not taken. And the “pass” mark has now been raised from 71 to 71.5 for the coming season. Whilst it is now somewhat easier than previously to get from 7 to 5, getting to 4 is becoming increasingly competitive and...

    Full-Time on Field Coach Dissent

One key thing to remember is that from an Observer point of view, it is likely the visual aspect that is all important. A manager could conceivably come up to you with a beaming smile, shake you warmly by the hand and then call you all sorts of unmentionable things … the Observer will be none...

    Minor Law changes Query

I agree. Whilst I think what they’ve said above is eminently pragmatic and sensible, it’s a crying shame it wasn’t included in Law from the get go, rather than them simply repeating the definition of GK control which can easily lead to a much harsher implementation.

    Minor Law changes Query

The below is from an IFAB Facebook post today. It sheds some light on their official guidance as to how to incorporate the actions of opponents into the mix and how / when the count should be started in that context. It is also in line with the practical implementation guidance given to PGMOL...

    Minor Law changes Query

As a (mildly) serious point, I do think that counting while changing position will end up looking less than great. We’ve seen two helpful recent changes to help refs be more athletic (single arm advantage and IFK signal now dropped earlier) … this law introduction will work in the opposite...

    DOGSO or no offence?

The decision as to whether or not to penalise the challenge is subjective. Initially the ball is won cleanly so we are then deciding if the secondary contact is worthy of a free kick .. I can see arguments both ways. However, if the foul is given, I’m comfortable with a YC sanction as I...

Throw ins- how far can the player get?

There are already large portions of the LOTG that are fundamentally different at the professional level … VAR has been the driver of that. I totally agree that the higher levels are role models and that some of the way they are asked to interpret the Laws makes life harder for lower levels. I...

Throw ins- how far can the player get?

You seem to be under the misapprehension that the ‘job’ of the officials at the highest levels is to slavishly enforce the letter of the law in order to best support their grassroots colleagues. In reality, their role is to best meet the needs of their employers in a fair and consistent way...

    IFAB Law Changes for 2025/26

I don’t see anyone defending the status quo. Seems to me that all posters are in favour of the attempt to speed up the game .. the debate is the rigidity with which it can / must be enforced. Think my main concern is the choice to vilify this particular referee for the exact time to blow the...

    IFAB Law Changes for 2025/26

With more than 35,000 referees in England alone, application of ALL laws will inevitably be wildly inconsistent. From how much leeway to give on throw in locations, to what exactly constitutes a reckless tackle. From the measurement of 9.15m to whether / how much time to add when a ball gets...

    IFAB Law Changes for 2025/26

Not starting the count until the GK has that opportunity is eminently sensible. But not (yet) part of the laws. I’m all in favour of the overall change (and a firm believer it will overall work well at all levels of the game), but I believe the knock on implications and ramifications for...

Changes to be aware of for 2025/26 season

From my PL2 experience last season, it works really well overall. Acts as a deterrent to keepers taking the proverbial and everyone adjusts to the new reality. That said, my prediction is that the biggest issue will be in regard to an increase in attackers attempting to delay quick release …...

    Palace v Man City FAC

Across the totality of the FA Cup matches, the FA select their ‘own’ Level 2-4 referees for the majority of the games. This is then supplemented by County officials for some of the early rounds and PGMOL officials for the later rounds. The fact remains that the absence of any public PGMOL...

    Promotion dates L4 and above

At 5-4, the criteria for nomination are Crystal clear. Outside of exceptional circumstances, those who meet all the criteria can expect to be nominated by their County FA and those who don’t meet the criteria should be unsurprised at their lack of nomination. Once nominated, candidates are...

    Utd v villa

Very fair. I, of course, agree that following correct protocol would at least have avoided the harshest complaints. I think I just reacted to the word “minimise”, as a reduction from a 10/10 level of complaint to 8-9/10 wouldn’t change the overall unhelpful tone of the discussion

    Utd v villa

In no way convinced by this argument. Reality is that this decision, like so many others in football, was an incredibly marginal call. It would have been controversial either way, doubly so given the importance to Villa of this game. The controversy would simply have switched to ‘why on earth...
