    Handball creating goal scoring opportunity...

Uh... not at all. A "deliberate" action to handle the ball is a small part of the new handball wording (which again, as we've discussed repeatedly, has essentially been the interpretation used everywhere except in parts of the UK). The "where on the FOP" part? That's for stuff that isn't...

    Handball creating goal scoring opportunity...

Correctly disallowed -- Referee didn't spot the handball, VAR called it down pretty quickly.

    Handball creating goal scoring opportunity...

For those who didn't see it, in the 70th minute of last night's Copa America match between Colombia and Chile, there was a handball incident in the penalty area that created a goal scoring opportunity (heck, an outright goal!) -- this is a good example of a handball call that would be called...

    Women World Cup 2019

Let's be honest... under the direction everywhere in the world other than the UK, that was an offence for the last 3-4 years. The Laws just finally match up with the direction.

    Nor Aus VAR

The way I'm looking at it, she's put her arms down by her sides, in a natural place, not making the body larger. Secondly, watching it live, the player moves her body into the path of the ball, and live, it's not clear if hits the side of the chest or the bicep, but hey, referee thought it hit...

    Nor Aus VAR

Having finally seen this -- it seems to meet all the criteria in the LotG NOT to be called handball. So, I'm good with the overturn here.

Shots fired... VAR 0 Common Sense 1

Don't forget -- referees dealing with having VAR for the first time ever. The refs that have used VAR are having the shortest intervention stoppages and the most efficient usage. The ones that haven't are costing (what feels like) 10+ minutes a match.

World Cup NGA FRA (GK off line)

Actually, it's also a poor point. Pythagorean math tells us that coming off the line and angling your dive slightly foward shortens the distance needed to cover to get to the ball. The exact angle is, of course, dependent on the speed of the shot, but watch the best GKs, they all jump at an...

Shots fired... VAR 0 Common Sense 1

Don't have your premier competition your first kick at the can?

World Cup SCO ARG - The Timekeeper

Each World Cup venue is required to have a camera set on each goal line, looking directly down it. Those fixed cameras would be available to VAR, they're not always available to the broadcaster at the time of broadcast.

    Columbia v Argentina Dropped Ball

They transitioned to the new Laws for this. You can tell, because about 15s before it hits the referee, the GK takes a goal kick that is played by a teammate inside the area.

    World Cup - so far

They're not getting a call in the ear. They're following the instruction that they've been given, but taking it a bit too extremes. The same kinda thing happened with the VAR newbie ARs in the men's World Cup last summer. As the group stages start to wrap up, we're starting to see this done...

    Discussion of Law Changes

It was one of the principles they strove towards when doing the rewrite. Are they always successful at rewriting or simplifying? No.

    Discussion of Law Changes

Translation purposes. It used to be that the other languages suffered because of the "official" language... now the reverse is happening a bit. It's better for other languages, as there are a large number of translations now (as opposed to just French, Spanish, and German), but there is that...

    World Cup Aus Vs ITA

Remember that the first games of the World Cup last year were exactly the same. A lot of these ARs (just like last year) haven't worked much (if at all) with VAR. They're taking the directive to an extreme, and I fully expect that you'll see that reined in before the end of the group stage as...

    Discussion of Law Changes

I've been watching the U20 WC. Almost every team is playing it out of the back, and they seem to be revelling in the fact that they can take quick goal kicks and the ball does NOT have to leave the penalty area.

    Anyone ever scored a goal?

My only question is... what is he doing being THAT deep in the penalty area?

    Portsmouth V Sunderland

The referee is still involved, and can still hold off on restarting until the situation is appropriately safe again. There was an incident last fall in an MLS match where the referee pulled players off of the field due to safety and instructed one of the managers to talk with the offending...

    Newcastle v Southampton

Where the 'one' is the goalkeeper. So, strictly speaking, in classic terminology... this is a 'two on O'.
