    in the back

Things to consider: 1. Be side on so you can accurately judge what's happening. 2. Distinguish between someone pushing and someone backing in. Most of the time you hear these shouts it's a combination of both... therefore ignore. 3. Where is the ball? A certain amount of making space is...

    Assessment basics

If anything, the problem has now swung the other way. Younger referees have all the tech but don't tend to care about email! It's all about social media for them. Hence various FA edicts saying that email must be used NOT messages on Facebook, text messages, Snapchat videos etc.

    Assessment basics

A broadband connection is not a requirement for L4+ officiating. I think you'd struggle to find any best ever referee prospect who isn't exceptionally Internet-savvy.

    Assessment basics

Cooper Test is a bare minimum level of fitness (or at least, the 2600m for Level 4 is). You can knock that out and still not be at a credible level to officiate at contrib, imho.

Email and the web _is_ 20th century.

    First assistant referee assessment report

That's a good score. Although you will see quite a variance in marks at that level. I remember having an (in my own mind) quite an average game but ending up with an 80 on the assessment (!)

    moas query

Good question. I'd check the Order of Precedence. Personally, I leave other competitions OPEN. The relevant appointing secretaries know that there is always the risk that the FA could take me at short notice (although, touch wood, this has not happened yet in a way resulting in me needing to...

    Open Age Elbow!

    Violent conduct.

    Dissent by word or action

Perfectly put. Otherwise you end up in the 60th minute of the game kicking yourself for having left it too late. And then, perhaps to make things worse, an opponent will say something particularly bad which earns them an insta-caution, and they quite rightly will say, "But you've let him be in...

    Dissent by word or action

Yes. These are the more tricky ones to deal with. Outright dissent is easy. It's harder with the chippy / 'cute' players who are trying to undermine your authority while flying under the caution radar. Be proactive and deal with it early. Sometimes cutting them dead (perhaps with the...

    Travelling as a team

At contrib, the teams need to agree on the replacement official. So could be an official from either club or someone else entirely. If they fail to agree, the game will continue anyway. This is in the competition rules. As for their duties, that would depend on who they were / neutrality.

Should we be asking for name on every caution?

By shoving it straight in their face in an overly demonstrative manner.

    Flags

Having used the Refscall, Ervocom and the Touchline flags, my money is firmly with the Touchlines. Literally, as I bought a set. They are now in their third season and working flawlessly. Advantages: * Configurable beep, beep 'n' buzz, or just buzz. * Each flag has its own signature. * Low...

Roll on / roll off subs is in conflict with '3 from 5'. Please clarify what you mean.

Think strongly as to whether you need them at L6.

    Adrian's Red Card

It is the most nailed on red card you are likely to see. I am staggered that there is any argument for it not to be a red.

"Nice to haves" for a new ref

The one counting up - it's the total elapsed time. So, it is feasible to have a goal in the 47th minute of the first half, if stoppage time allows.

"Nice to haves" for a new ref

Looks like you have it well covered. As some others have said: 1. Any coin will do. I normally go with 50p though (get me!) purely because it is more tossable (!) 2. Two watches. One keeps going (counting upwards), and the other counts down from 45:00 and you can stop/start as required for...

    Premier League: Week 1

Jerome goal should have stood. That is never an IDFK in a million years. This is one of those where waiting just a touch to assess player reaction pays dividends!
