    Dissent

You have got to deal with dissent early. That may be a strong word. That may be the captain involved. It could be a straight caution. Which one depends on context and what has been said and done. The worst thing you can do is ignore it to give it a chance to settle. Chances are, it won't...

Debate: Is too much emphasis placed on referee 'levels'?

I think the situation is just fine ;-)

    Throw ins

Just watch out that if the player does 'spike it', that they are not the first player to touch it afterwards ;)

Suited and booted, stick to the facts, answer any questions, and always remember: You are a witness and not on trial in any way whatsoever.

    Eventful game back

I applaud the OP's self-analysis of the match, and it demonstrates the mind-set that will mould a great referee.

    Referee's "Club Marks"

Club marks balance out over the course of the season. Yes, some clubs will mark down due to a last-minute penalty decision they disagree with, or something equally dubious. But all the referees on the league face the same issue, so the system is fair because of that. I have always felt...

    Pre-match

90 minutes for me. I had the same policy at supply league level. There's a lot to cover pre-game, and I like to be in the position where I have briefed my team and also got change into my kit ready for the exchange of team-sheets. That then gives about 45 minutes for preparation, warm-up, and...

    Is this pedantic?

You already know the answer: It's both correct in Law and pedantic ;-) However, this is one of those simple ones you can take control of. Always check. Especially since players will always try it on (typically the winger behind you when you are in your kick-off position).

Bit of a shocker this morning

'sucked in' is a good phrase here. Proactive communication CAN be a good tool, but you will come across players that once you engage with them, use it as a cue to start questioning everything. Sometimes ignoring a question is the best thing to do - as the player will just give up after that...

    Advantage

Another reason to be careful when playing Advantage is it can damage your match control if you fail to keep track of the fouls that are going on. For example: A player may repeatedly be getting kicked and getting frustrated, and a referee is correct in playing Advantage.... but the wider...

    Keith Hackett outdoes himself

100% certain is what you think you have seen. I've watched some of the Hawkeye demonstration videos, and it is incredible how, in real-time, I was *totally* sure the ball had / had not crossed the line, but when replayed at 'Hawkeye speed' demonstrated I was completely wrong. Along similar...

    My weekend

Guidance from FA in the last 'big meeting' about this sort of thing: Gets ball, not player: Yellow Gets ball and player: RED Gets player: RED The jist of the above is that the challenge could be made without being close to the player at all (more of a block, to be honest). However, the moment...

Open Age Player distance at a foul

You are wrong in Law though. Padfoot is correct here.

Dartford v Maidstone, offside or not? Ref reverses assistant's flag.

This was the correct course of action by the AR. At this level, it is typical for the briefing to include this scenario: If the assistant feels that there is a player in an offside position who MIGHT have interfered (but he can't tell 100% because of the angle), then the instruction is to flag...

would any of you have cautioned?

As has been hinted, if you did caution in this scenario, an assessor wouldn't really have to artificially do anything: Your match control would suffer hugely from that moment on. BOTH teams would find the decision laughable and support each other in that feeling.

Open Age How to explain that you are postponing the match

Judging from the current weather, it won't be a close call to make, which always helps. For credibility, inspect the pitch thoroughly even if it _is_ obvious. Take a ball with you. Check everywhere. Then, when you tell the managers the game is off, you have plenty of examples to back it...

    Season from hell

What's the grouping of cards in a typical game, in terms of which minutes you are giving them?

What is the best time to observe a minutes silence?

I normally do this after both the handshakes (if applicable) AND the coin-toss. This is in case the teams want to turn things round. Once that's done, silence with the teams stationed around the centre circle. Then it is a smooth transition to kick-off.
