    Promotion 17/18

And in other promotion news... I'm happy to be promoted to the Panel Select Assistant Referee list for next season. This means I'll be running the line on Conference National - exciting stuff! I'm still in a Dual Role so will be continuing to referee on the contributory leagues as well.

    General Election 2017

In general, those on this board are able to walk without assistance still, and so in terms of the demographics are least likely to vote Conservative.

    how long, ref?

I always reply with how much time has been played. Safer that way.

    Aspiring Referee (Hopefully)

I picked up a job lot of pencils from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Connect-Half-Pencil-Pack-144/dp/B000NM4K0G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494577155&sr=8-1&keywords=small+pencils

Buzzer Flags - But What Ones

I've used all the various sets. Touchline are my favourite, and the set I currently own. They have so far gone four full seasons without issue.

AR throws up during SPFL match

It's not just down to safety, it's credibility: If your assistant has been throwing up at the side of the pitch, what credibility does he have for the rest of the game?

    New Level 4 Advice

Yes, personally I got promoted to L3 to recover O:)

    New Level 4 Advice

    1. Pass the fitness test. That's the only focus for now. The number of referees that have done all the hard work to get L4, then throw it away by screwing up the fitness test, is more than it should be.

    County Badge?

Just to reinforce, as a L4 or above you will be appointed to FA competitions. Unless you have earned the Three Lions badge due to being involved in an FA competition final (or international duty), you must wear a county badge.

    Engaging crowd

Most of what you hear from behind when on the line is boring, as it is the same mis-informed rubbish week in week out. Most recent one was the usual, "You're not allowed to tell the players what to do!" from an elderly gent behind me, when I'm doing the usual, "Steady, steady..." when play is...

    Level 3 Promotions

The percentage of newly promoted L3 who fail the fitness test staggered me when the FA told us at a recent seminar.

    Club Marks

There isn't really much to say to the players before the game. Be polite, make conversation, be pro, and DO THE JOB on the pitch. That's what they expect, and from that the club marks will come.

    Ross County vs Celtic

This is generally something I cover in my pre-match. 99% of the time I give a penalty, yet an AR may thing I am harsh / wrong to some degree, I don't expect them to get involved. It's my call / it's about angles / all the usual bits and pieces. This is the other 1%. The player reaction here...

    cup final yesterday

As has been said, there's no excuse for behaving in this way when an AR. The mindset has be to be different. If I'm refereeing, I'm the boss, I expect my team to follow my lead. That said, if they work hard for me, part of my 'contract' with them is that I will run through walls for them...

Change to Observer report writing Level 4

70-73 is the 'expected performance' range. Anything below that is below. Anything above is, well, above. As for what your average needs to be, that will vary between years, levels, leagues and what you want to achieve for the year. A few years ago, the average Observer mark for referees at...

Change to Observer report writing Level 4

The same change applies to 2B and 3. From my point of view, I've not noticed a difference in the actual marks being awarded and am, therefore, happy. That said, my latest game was a critical 'must win' for both sides, and featured 6 cautions and 1 send-off for VC, in front of a crowd of about...

    6-5 Observation

It's also confusing roles / responsibilities a little bit if you delegate subs to your senior AR... but then sometimes take them off him / her. To me, that isn't strong teamwork. Trust them. You also don't want to get into the habit of going into the Drama Zone (i.e. technical areas) for this...

    6-5 Observation

Strange advice. If I have NARs, I will never get involved with substitutions, and I've never received anything like the above in terms of development advice.

Not an option for my county yet (just checked WGS to be sure!)
