    Helpful Captain?

I did thank him, saved me and his team a lot of trouble.

I'm back playing after 10+ years reffing

I've started playing football during the week at a five a side place (fa sanctioned don't worry) as a goalkeeper, and it's really helped with the weekend refereeing. I don't argue with the referees but it's kind of refreshing to actually experience it from the other perspective. At times I've...

    Helpful Captain?

I had one today where a player who was already on a caution was running up to me to dispute a foul, judging by his body language I knew he was about to shout a fair amount of abuse and I was thinking to myself "oh great, here we go." Before he can even get a word in, his captain comes running...

    Junior/Youth Taking a booking

I don't tend to make players face the cards, but when I'm talking to them they have to be listening to me. If they keep walking away and they're losing I just simply say "I wasn't finished, it's your time your wasting." In honesty 90% of players don't mean disrespect, they're just not...

Open Age Pitch Boundary and throws

I didn't mean any disrespect by it, I was just genuinely asking for clarification from a more senior and experienced referee. It pays to learn from the best after all.

    2 games tomorrow

I'll do games in the afternoon on a Sunday if people are short, as my priority is to Sunday morning football. It's not fair on the first teams if you're not up to standard, but usually the second teams will be grateful to have a slightly tired ref as opposed to no ref.

    Academy U15

To be fair, I've seen some good academies which uphold respect, because even when then players are not carded, they face internal discipline or even expulsion for their actions. Of course it's all part and parcel, some academies don't really protect their referees, in that case I'd have nothing...

    What would your decision be.....

A kick for violent conduct is always a direct free kick, unless it's happened during a stop in play AFAIK. Careless, Reckless and Excessive Force does not apply to violent conduct, obviously if a player's barely tapped an opposition player in frustration, then use your head and common sense...

Open Age Pitch Boundary and throws

When you say any infringement, what is actually mentioned. I'm aware of foul throws and such, but what else is specifically mentioned? Just for clarity

    What would your decision be.....

Red card for violent conduct. Kicks or attempts to kick a player. No debate about it, if it's as bad as you say.

    Not much to say her...

You say that but it's not like a player having a strop, he's being aggressive and intimidating a match official, you can't talk gently when someone does that, wineries you need to feign anger in order to create a barrier for yourself. I'm not saying you need to do anything in retaliation but if...

Was I too harsh? Or maybe even too lenient?

Give them one warning if you feel like it, then caution. If he's stupid enough to carry on then he goes. The second one can be argued a yellow, especially if he's thrown his hands up. I'd not do much otherwise but the hands in the air is a visual sign of dissent. If you let one get away with...

    An odd one

If he has an issue, he can take it up with the league. On the FOP, you are the referee and sole decision maker so he needs to know that.

Open Age Pitch Boundary and throws

The laws of the game says the throw in must be taken from the point at which the ball pet the field of play, so I would say this is a retake. Obviously a couple of yards isn't gonna make a difference but he has gained an unlawful advantage by throwing from that far out, because the opposition...

    Booking for Dissent

If anything, I'm harder on them that age when it comes to dissent. They wouldn't expect to get away with backchat to their teachers or parents, so why is a referee any different? In a way, we're teaching these kids to play the game, so we should act responsible and deal with dissent accordingly.

    Club Marks

75% of managers and players I've met don't know much about refereeing, and I don't mean that they're rude or mouthy, just that they genuinely don't know about it (much as I don't know much about playing!). Advice is always good, but the real people you should be paying attention to are your...

Struggling with directional issues/which team is kicking where?

Point to whatever goal they're attacking. Don't be afraid to blow your whistle then slowly raise your arm towards their attacking direction. Also if you're vocal and shout "Red free kick! Blue free kick!" Not only will it help your communication and match control, but it'll help you get it right...

    Dress Code: Sensible clothing

It's better to be over dressed than under dressed. And if you're not sure, ask! I'm sure the ref sec or middle ref won't bite your head off for asking.

Open Age Chistian League Division 1 red card

When considering the difference between dissent and foul and abusive language, it's important to consider what they say, of its a personally directed insult or frustration in general etc, but also consider how provocative the player is being, the manner in which he's said it etc. as well. It...

    What happens if....

Well firstly, all goals must be secured either by a back bar, sandbags or goal pegs/hooks. If a goal isn't secured in any way, I'd be asking myself if they were safe. Even if they are plastic goals, they can still cause potential for injury and confusion that could have easily been otherwise...
