    Dangerous Play

Gave a yellow card a while back where a player tried a bicycle kick and smashed the other guy in the face. I feel like without context, you'd be tempted to give a red, but that's why referees are there. They're the human element of the game and are in a position to feel the context of the...

3 teams in a penalty shootout?

3 way no holds barred, no disqualifications penalty shootout. Sledgehammers, chairs and tables are all allowed, and encouraged. Last team standing and able to complete 5 spot kicks wins.

    Games disappearing from WGS

Double check with your RDO if you're unsure. You've done your part once you send it in. If there's any issue, your FA will approach you to smooth it out. They're not all that scary lol. Also, speaking of missing games, I have this problem where my match fee goes missing. It seems to happen most...

VAR - Everton vs Spurs Son “penalty”

I'll bite. It honestly looks more like a dive than a penalty. I can see the cause for appeal but the defender tumbles over and makes contact, then Son goes down to try and get the penalty. Son is clearly on his feet when he feels the contact, then throws himself off balance intentionally. To...

    Junior/Youth U12s incident

Sounds like you got it right to be honest. Sometimes players do get tangled, and it can help to yell "play on they're just tangled!" However if one player has deliberately prevented the other from getting up, then I would say a free kick is the minimum, with possibly a yellow as well.

    Interesting game....

Looks like the situation escalated as the referee did not correctly sanction fouls. The tackle from the blue player onto the red player from behind should have been a red card. The one before that was a yellow.

Packing it in for a month

If he's come to you after the final whistle and said that, don't be afraid to put a report in. And don't worry about assessments. Honestly, people see it that a below standard is a fail. If anything, it's not a fail. It's a chance to learn what you did wrong and put it right.

Open Age What do you reckon?

I think it can slowly creep over that line in dissent. For example, let's say a player goes "our ball ref!" Most of us (I hope) would ignore it or respond in like. Then that player goes "Ref penalty!" Again, I would elect to ignore this, maybe have a quiet informal word at the next break...

Taking dissent YC for the team?

Call the captain over, explain that you felt that comment directed at you was dissent, and that if he doesn't reign in his players they will be sin binned. Or if you feel as if you have been implied to be a cheat, then inform the captain that the next time you hear similar language, you will be...

Head injury then a promising attack

The right decision. Just because he isn't holding his head doesn't mean he isn't hurt or concussed. You have a duty of care to the players so to play on ignoring this would be failing to do your job at the most basic level unfortunately. If you are sure it is head injury, then don't hesitate...

    Was it really Violent Conduct?

OFFINABUS. Make sure you report what you heard and saw. Remember, if you are unsure at the time, you do nothave to tell players what they are being dismissed for. Chances are, he knows anyways lol. Edit: might get a bit of flack for it but the important thing is that he walks. I'd encourage...

Think I missed a mandatory caution

If he's deliberately scuffed it up then it is a caution. At least you warned the player and there was "no harm, no foul" at the end of the day. Something to learn for next time.

    Advantage in Penalty Area

I was always taught that there is no greater advantage than a penalty. It is almost a free goal to be honest. If you've waited 3 seconds, then I'd be tempted to blow up and simply fib "sorry gents, dropped my whistle." Players don't get a free chance to make a foul in the box if the attacker...

    Worthy of extraordinary report?

Think it accumulates the more you get sent off. First is 1 game, second is 2 games etc. Goes for yellows as well, if you get 5 yellows in a half season I think, you get a game ban then two games for 10 yellows etc.

    Worthy of extraordinary report?

Yeah sod him, if he was just moaning to his mates then I'd be inclined to let it go but that sounds like threatening behaviour. I have no tolerance for those types in my games. If its any consolation, he probably was just trying to be a big man to his mates. The ones that shout the loudest are...

    First Middle

LOTG says that a game must be of two equal halves. Inevitably you will get some players who want to play two 45 minutes and some who want three 30 minutes. Having stoppages at 30 and 60 is a happy compromise, plus it just looks more professional and proper.

    First Middle

A little tip for you: when managers want to to 3 30's, I always say we will play two 45 half's but I'll make stoppages at 30 and 60 if they need to take on fluids, organise the tactics and team etc. Gives you the best of both worlds. Coaches are both happy because they get to organise their...

    Coach Dismissal

As soon as he said those threatening words, you should abandon and report to the competition organisers and local FA as soon as realistically possible. You're only one person, above all you have a right to referee without the threat of harm or any sort of implication of it. Make sure you look...

    Blowing up on time

You are the referee and you are the sole timekeeper, so you decide when time is up. Try to use a bit of common sense and let the attack reach its natural conclusion, or have the ball run out of play. If a team scores dead on the last kick, let them kick off again then blow and say that time...
