    tournaments fees - again

I did a tournament at an academy earlier this season. 2.5 hours, 5 games, 8 refs (4 pitches) £40 each. Free food and drinks. We were all guaranteed between 3 games (all groups) and 5 (SF and Final as well, which is what I ended up getting). I benchmark everything roughly on that now, as regular...

Congrats to all promoted at any level for next season!

    Promotion dates L4 and above

Not surprised at all as they were all excellent officials but I've just seen 6 refs (at least, not read the whole list) on my local Step 7 get their 4's (and one get their 3) and we were already short of 5's. Wonder how we'll manage with that this season. Better get my boots dusted off and get...

    Utd v villa

Agree but 2021 was pretty much behind closed doors - not the same experience for the match official!

    Utd v villa

I would agree @Refollie but he only refereed it 2 years ago. Seems a bit unfair getting it twice that quickly. MO definitely shouldn't have been VAR on a nothing game though. That could have instead been used to give one of the (not already appointed) SG2 officials experience in the role.

    Season review 24/25

2nd season, first in OA football, stats below. 4 semis and a final. Had some extremely challenging games this season and thought about packing it in a few times. Decided to carry on and just bin youth games though. Had some great games and also some where I dropped the odd clanger. The...

    Cup final errors

Also not a final but the 12th game of my career was a semi final last season. Literally 2 minutes in I dropped an absolute clanger and gave a pen for handball. AR (thank god I had them appointed literally 20 mins before KO) calls me over. “It’s nowhere near his arm mate, hits his thigh then...

    Palace v Man City FAC

@bester I can genuinely only think of one example where the referee themselves initiated the review to sell the decision. It was Jarred Gillett when he was mic'd up in that A-League match. It helped then but I'm not sure making it normal would be a good idea, as it leaves too much room for just...

    Palace v Man City FAC

Definitely a red for me. My gut instinct was pen but I'm not convinced now.

    Referee attire

No. I had one game back in August where not only did the ref have a different brand to me and the other AR, his top was even a different colour! Not necessarily ideal but 100% not a requirement to match.

    Prayers up for Taiwo Awoniyi

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the guidance with flagging immediately when obvious only applied if there was no clear goalscoring opportunity (like there was here), so therefore meaning the delayed flag was correct? I may be wrong but that was my understanding.

    Junior/Youth 2 Finals, 1 day

Congrats on getting the appointments! As others have said, 4th at that level is literally just doing what the ref asks, and helping manage the benches. No one will really notice you're there.

    A year today

I'll be honest @Homer Ref I've just finished my second season. I thought about packing it in several times this season, unlike last season. It's important to remember we will likely make less mistakes than the players and coaches do, and it sounds like you have reflected well. I've ultimately...

2024-25 UEFA Competitions Finals Match Official Appointments

They also did a UECL semi first leg at Betis (or whoever hosted that leg)

    U12 OFFINABUS

Exactly! That team folded recently and I noticed they'd had 3 consecutive games abandoned so I wonder if that was more of a punishment than a choice 🤷‍♂️

    U12 OFFINABUS

I wish all coaches took that approach! I was called similar in an U13 game and when the RC had been shown, the coaches tried to leave him on the pitch!

    Referee attire

You'd be surprised that a significant number of grassroots officials end up with lines in the early rounds of those competitions to make up the numbers. My 3rd open age match was as AR1 in the Women's FA Cup second qualifying round. I had a county badge printed on my shirt anyway so didn't make...
