France v Paraguay

Missed yellow cards here.
Probably needs to reel it in a bit to get bsck control as the appearance is he has, or is close, to losing control and it turning into a battle royale.

Barcola challenge, maybe a card fkr the way went in but the Paraguay player was very theatrical with his antics on the floor.
Then the deliberate drag back on Mbappe outside the area and no card. Then the apparent slap on his arm to stop him getting into a promising passing position.

So far, so tetchy.

Be very surprised if this finishes 11 v 11. Paraguay channeling Wimbledon of old to unsettle France with tactical fouls, niggles and cheap shots off the ball.

My brother is adamant that Mbappe covered his mouth confrontationally when it all nearly boiled over. Footage does make it look like he might have, but not overly clear

Not impressed with the ref - bought everything from Paraguay
Given my earlier comment about finishing 11v11, his reluctance to caution when one is justified could well end up keeping it at that.

Doesn’t sit right with me but that’s why I’ve plateaued at 5

I don’t like criticising referees but I will do when it’s justified.

Another one going home - can’t be a shrinking violet at this level.

In isolation I can accept that one for Koné as a “threshold” caution. But given what’s gone before I’m left shaking my head.

Kone one is clearly reckless for me, regardless of threshold. Consistency shouldn’t mean consistently wrong.

I’m curious for people’s thoughts on the kick out. I’m assuming force is low enough we go yellow? I think it’s the same guy who scuffed up the penalty mark? If so, should be two cautions and he should be gone regardless.

First game I’ve seen this WC where I felt like it really could boil over. Referee was doing his best impression of a bouncer trying to pull players apart in the mass con (unimpressed).

This is just sad. No foul recognition, no confidence, no management ability. The penalty should have been an easy on-field call, as should a bunch of other fouls.

This was simply terrible assigning. The only possible thing I can consider is Collina and his assigning team thought France would cruise to an easy win and that they could somehow hide Tantashev. That clearly did not happen. This is the equivalent of a Sunday morning men's league match or an American men's junior college match where the referee loses control early and never has a chance to regain it.

The contrasts between Michael Oliver and Tantashev being able to rein in a challenging game - or not - are striking.
