The two PSG VAR calls on handball against Newcastle - one two seasons ago and one today - are the two worst examples of “European” handball laws I think I’ve ever seen…this one is a double-deflection, the second being off PSG attacker’s arm, onto the hand of the defender with no time at all to do anything about it.

And now the ref has given a foul on Elanga but also booked him because the offending player (Kvaratskelia) got injured in making the challenge?!

If he's giving the double deflection as handball then what about the handball at the other end of the pitch after a Newcastle long throw to Burn?
 
Well exactly - I would give neither but the PSG one would have made more sense given that he had time to judge the trajectory of the ball.
 
Haven't seen it. But if it was given for making their body unnaturally bigger, then deflection, distance, speed... all of those measures go out the door because they are measures for deliberateness.

Deflection as well? I get distance and speed, as even if it’s close by, you’ve deliberately put your arm where the ball is likely to go. With deflection though the point is that you had no reasonable way of knowing where the ball would end up.

That's the whole point though, no? Making body bigger is way of defending because it increase chances of blocking because you don't know where the ball is going. Like keeping at close range.

With speed and distance, why put arm there if you know where the ball is likely to go? Use other legal body parts. Use of arm imporves your chances of blocking because you can't react fast enough. It's a similar concept to deflection. There is only one reason a player makes their body unaturally bigger. My interpretation anyway.
 
I wish the commentators learn to accept that UEFA has a lower interpretation of handball so that was always going to be given especially as it went to VAR and the referee was never going to reject it. Even our English officials will probably give that because that is what UEFA expects.

I think it's slightly harsh but I think it's understandable why they have given it, it certainly nowhere near as bad as the one a few years ago, the defender arm was well away from the body and he did knock the ball away with his hand.
 
I’d like to hear the VAR discussion on this one. I think this was likely given as deliberate with the arm coming to the ball. I’d be more surprised by this not being called than that it was called. I don’t think this is a debatable call in most parts of the world.
 
I'm a Toon fan and have only seen the Miley/handball/penalty incident. I think the boy knew what he was doing and that the penalty call was correct.

I agree, I can't understand why his arm made the movement that it did, he basically swats the ball away. Granted it looks worse in slow motion, but as soon as I saw it I was 100% sure it would be a penalty, and I'm reasonably confident it would also be in the EPL.

His hand moves towards the ball. That’s deliberate handling. No need to consider distance, deflections etc, leave that stuff for unnaturally bigger.
