The Ref Stop

Captains only - how are you doing?

Had my first match today under the new “only captains can approach the ref”… and I know many members here have had a few more weeks.

How are you dealing with it?
Are you using the hand/halt signal - and when?
Has it changed your approach (i.e. are you more careful about moving towards action areas after whistling?
Are you briefing the captains?

Bonus - futsal notes on this?

We have been told that it is an opt in trial for leagues at present. No one has opted in, in our areas.

So business as usual.

But I did have a coach recently who was extremely serious on the surrounding part.

Almost no exceptions, third person in gets sin binned. Is this written somewhere. Would like to digest it a little better!

🤔 As far as I know English FA aren't involved in the trial... Which is all it is currently.

@OldNavyRef not sure about grassroots but certainly level 3 refs were briefed preseason that 2 players or more at least one had to be cautioned.

Interesting, our futsal season just started - I know, different game, and we have had good and clear training and the teams have been briefed. Any non-captain approaching the ref is asking for a YC. The training was good at pointing out how to avoid refs initiating unecessary angst, to be aware of this if approaching players or wanting to explain… and also good general message about image of the game and keeping things moving.

There’s a bit of a tempo change challenge I am experiencing in higher level matches. I am used to slowing things down if I think I need more control, but we are kinda tacitly encouraged to interfere less and keep the pace up. I like it.

My RDO was at a local RA event last month and he said in grassroots the general expectation is a sin bin + ER if it's 3 or more, if it is only 2 then a sin bin may be appropriate but not mandatory.
