How strict are you with cautions in friendlies

Maybe a touch more lenient if it's being played in a good spirit. However I find most friendlies I do are still quite competitive and can get aggy so then cards will start coming out as per a normal league game. You don't want players seeing friendlies as 'free reign' where they can leave one on the opponents.

Will red card without a second thought for serious foul play
95% for violent conduct
95% offensive etc
75% Dogso things
second yellows, I be doing that if out of options

Yellows, if its blatent and can only be a yellow, and-or, if I feel right, need a yellow here, prone to ignore say simulation, prone to allow four, five minorist of fouls by same player, would ignore delaying restarts, technical things

that said, if something deserves a yellow five min in, so be it

My standard spiel to captains pre match is, it's.preseason, play it like a preseason game I will ref it as such. Rules are the same so if you want to play at normal competitive level it will be reffed in the same way.
Then I just ref what's in front of me.
Am I more lenient, probably yes, perhaps a b*ollocking for a careless spa or DRP but if the game so requires a caution or a send off then there is no leniency.
SFP/VC ETC there is no wiggle room. Proper reckless tackles. No wiggle room. Etc.

Two weeks ago I sent a U19 player off in a friendly for two SPA/USB cautions. You can probably guess whether I dial my cautions back in friendlies based on that. ;)

Ref it the same as every other game.

Sent a keeper off a few weeks ago for DOGSO. Got shout from coaches, its only a friendly.

Laws are laws boys

I ref the same as any other game. Friendlies are also there to benefit our development pre-season, why should we try to referee a game differently just because is says “friendly” on the tin. 9 times out of 10 I don’t think these friendlies are so friendly anyway.

I understand the laws are the laws but in all seriousness, who benefits from that? I don’t see the harm in downgrading the card but giving a warning to say had this been a league game, you’d be off. The opposition team are never going to be screaming for a Red in a preseason game.

Violent conduct, INOFFABUS etc yes, get them gone. It’s never acceptable to cause harm or abuse an individual but DOGSO? That can be managed responsibly to let everyone just carry on playing football

You could yellow for DOGSO, your issue then comes later on when you do have to go red for something else, of course to the other team

balancing act

aside from that, on occassion, right time, right place, you can try justifying your red by explaining in s real game, you would need quickly reorganise, so, use it as practise

No need to justify a red. DOGSO is DOGSO

I just referee it as a normal game, cards and all, but make that clear to managers and captains at the start so they know what to expect. Perhaps I’m a touch more lenient on persistent infringement but that’s it off the top of my head.

Last big friendly I did had an ex prem striker coaching. I gave a blatant SPA second yellow RC. The benches are then both asking my AR1 to let them carry on 11 vs 11.

FFS I just said no. Rock and a hard place. The second yellow was a blatant trip preventing a run on goal one-on-one from halfway. 20 yards nearer goal would be DOGSO. If I don’t give it I’m f***** as there will be complaints.

After the RC I can’t allow 11 vs 11, these were in the top couple of u17 and u20 teams on the country. So, I quickly said no and pointed out that there’s still value in ”training” 10 vs 11 for 20 minutes. As it was the end of the game was cracking - but I totally understand why some people won’t do friendlies.

I know I won’t get invited back. I have top flight womens futsal next week. I will make it clear it’s ”full match conditions” in the prematch.

Yeah you did the right thing.

I had a Sunday league friendly two weeks ago between two teams who know each other well. Before kick off, the home manager told me the classic “it’s just a friendly, you’ll have no trouble today etc”, before informing me that in the same friendly last season, an away player was sent off for punching an opponent in the face. Last year’s ref apparently let them carry on 11 v 11. I politely told him that wouldn’t be happening this year.

No reds in the end, but I did have a DOGSO-yellow.

Well it could be argued that it benefits both teams in that the 10 now need to learn to play as a ten and the 11 now need to learn to break down a team playing as a 10.

Not really my problem. Where do you draw the line if I don’t red for that but red for something later on?

If they wanted no cards in a friendly, dont pay me money to do the game. Simple

Spot on

This. If you want officials from your "level" then pay them the same rate and expect them to do the same job. The players train midweek, I keep fit... a match is a match, not a do some of it-match.

Also agreed 100% here. Had a player last pre-season throw a punch, only a young lad, and didn't connect, but both those points are irrelevant. Manager was quick to wheel out the "he needs to learn" line of defence. I responded by saying he just has.

Happened many times ive sent players off in pre season games. Every time they ask if they can sub him and i'm like no you cant, he's been sent off. Massive arguements follow and the classic ive ruined the game too.

Especially in my early days I sent a player off for two cautions and the first was for him being a complete **** with a goal celebration where he gave me the name "Donald Duck".
