I think the penalty is soft, but I also think it is given for the second challenge (Jensen I think) who catches Sterling's thigh. No way VAR can overrule because of that contact.
I don't think it was soft. I think it was wrong. There was no penalty there. Full stop.

The penalty situation came about because England were literally all over Denmark. They were being overrun and Schmeichel stopped 3 or 4 certain goals going in. When you're under the cosh like that something has to give. Soft penalty yes, but England were putting that ball in the net eventually, one way or another.

But you are ignoring my point, VAR cannot intervene because it wasn't a clear or obvious error.

My immediate reaction real time was no foul, but when I looked at the replay Jensen does catch Sterling.

This still shows a slight knock that, at the speed Sterling would have been at, would certainly have made him unbalanced, whether a foul is another question.
So although a lot of people stating he was already diving, he was more already falling when Jensen then knocked into him.

Yes, that was what I meant about the second challenge, he has clearly caught him and there is no way VAR could say that was a clear and obvious error.

The other complaint I've read everywhere is the 2nd ball on the pitch...

From Law 5:

an extra ball, other object or animal enters the field of play during the match, the referee must:

stop play (and restart with a dropped ball) only if it interferes with play – unless the ball is going into the goal and the interference does not prevent a defending player playing the ball; the goal is awarded if the ball enters the goal (even if contact was made with the ball) unless the interference was by the attacking team
allow play to continue if it does not interfere with play and have it removed at the earliest possible opportunity

No player was paying any attention to the second ball, and the ball wasn't in the way of anyone's running path. It wasn't interfering with play.

Surely that’s not legitimate justification for that penalty though?

What has England battering Denmark got to do with it? No guarantees a goal would of been scored either. It's a very soft penelty though but let's be honest, if Sterling did not throw himself to the ground, there would never be any penelty regardless what contact there is. Therefore the same old line gets trotted out of its basically encouraging players going down under any contact because your increasing your chances of a penelty being given for you if you do.

Would love too see the reaction if it was given at the other end though. It does leave with a bit of a bad taste because a semi final got decided on that decision and I think Danny Makkelie is a top official but I think he got that wrong and most fans would probably agree with that if they were looking as a neautrul.

I think you pretty much gave what I would have said.

Yes he was already diving.
And I would not call that a knock. Its hardly 'contact'. Still image is misleading here. And even if contact is made, contact does not equal foul.

Sterling is known for milking penalties. I am surprised Makkelie fell for it.

Don't think it's a pen but once it has been given then VAR can't overuke due to there being contact by the 2nd defender. Its a little unsatisfactory if we're honest but I totally understand why the "we don't want to re referee the game policy" is there. I've believed from day one that we will see that stance wane away and it will be a case of the VAR referee making pen calls. Refs are going to leave more and more pen calls to VAR, its a natural process of self preservation for all really.

I thought the ref was a little hesitant all night. There were some very clear shirt pulling incidents which everyone expected to be a yellow but were just given as a foul. Poulson on Maguire 2nd half was the easiest yellow ever at it wasn't given and he did it twice more and still avoided a yellow. Maybe its a directive to avoid carding so much in the ko's? But it seemed way out of kilter with modern expectations. Almost as if he was overthinking the management of the game. I'm not blaming him here, hea not been bad but imo slightly lower than the exceptionally high quality we've seen this tournament. I actually think that refereeing may see a bit of a bounce following how positive the refereeing has been recieved and appreciated in the UK during the tournament.

Thought Sterling was falling prior to contact but can see why the ref gave it given his position. On balance England played better (and as an Australian that was hard to write) and deserved to go through.

England playing keepies off for the last 3 minutes was pretty neat.
