Lapsed Level 5... what have I missed?

Afternoon all,

Just rejoined the forum after a 5-year break. I've registered again with my CFA and done the DBS etc; I'm getting back into the mindset of wanting to officiate.

I'm a stone lighter than when I quit as a Level 5, and a hell of a lot fitter. Also older (and possibly wiser).

So, with reference to LOTG, what do I need to be paying close attention to? After a read, it seems the biggest changes are the application of handball, goal kicks and substitution procedure. I am ploughing through the law changes now, but since my last game in 2014 it all needs refreshing in my mind!

Any pointers or advice gratefully received!

The Referee Store
...and drop balls, restarts for various unusual scenarios, tweaks to offside, sin bins and VAR!

Quite a few changes since 14!

The areferee.com quizzes are worth a look;)

Any you can now wear coloured tops - in certain CFA's and then only certain colours....:p

Unfortunately for you, you've been away for what is arguably the largest amount of changes ever seen in such a short period, in the history of the Laws of the Game.

When there were only a couple of changes per year, I used to make a short summary of what the changes were so I could easily refer back to it when needed. Here's what I have for the years 2016-19:

2016/17 - 96 changes (see separate file)
2017/18 - 43 changes (see separate file)
2018/19 - 28 changes (see separate file)

The separate files I reference are the summaries issued by the IFAB - they're still available on their website, (I think).

A few big impact change examples you don't want to get wrong

- DOGSO is not always a red card
- offences outside of FOP are now FK possibly PK
- similarly for some offences by team officials/subs

I really recommend going through the list PG suggested. I don't think the files referenced are in the IFAB website but you can find them at the end of each corresponding LOTG book/file. You can find the LOTG files in the resources section of this forum.

Football wise, 5 years ago, let me think, Leeds were probably top of the championship coasting to an inevitable promotion and The Massive we’re basking in the play offs just waiting to take their place back at the top table of English football whilst looking down on a little hoof ball pub team wallowing in League One with Nigel Atkins setting a course for League 2.
Someone then employed some idiots at IFAB to £&@k up offsides, hand balls, VAR, Sin Bins and conspire to then they let some fake sheikh put a quid into Dem Blades and turn them into Yorkshire’s answer to Barcelona..... Currently, Leeds are still on the brink but Wednesday may get demoted to The Blue Square for fiddling.....It’s a funny old game! ❤️ Welcome back ⚔️

I could only find the 2016-17 changes file, so I uploaded the files listing the changes only, for 2017-18, 2018-19 & 2019-20, into the same Resources section.

I think there has also been a conceptual swing in how the Laws are written that has accelerated in the past few years. The Laws have gone from being concept driven to having much more specifics and exceptions.
