Pre Match Level 4 and Above

The standard of AR’s assisting L4’s can be somewhat varied, I am always clear with my AR’s about what an offence is (for example, wide free kick goes to the near post, if a player is stood in an offside position when the kick is taken beyond the back post then they are not to be penalised -...

Open Age Ball hit defender's face, down, other defenders aborted, attacking team scored immediately

If a player gets hit hard in face with the ball and goes down, regardless of age, you should be stopping the game immediately and getting the trainer on. Player safety is number 1 concern, you can’t take the chance that it might not be serious.

    Deliberate Trick?

Never ever an offence. Would be seriously worried for any referee who penalised this in a game.

    Crystal Palace Vs Manchester United

It is incredibly difficult to sell a red card at that level when there was literally zero contact with the opposing player. Correct call.

    Sept 14-15 Premier League discussions

At least 2 delaying the restart cautions in the same game particularly harsh, especially the Fernandes one where Attwell hadn’t even blown his whistle to indicate ball out of play (with AR out of player eye line) Have a feeling 2 weeks ago these wouldn’t have resulted in cautions but suspect...

    Jewellery / Wrist Tape

Most PL players will wear club issue GPS pods that sit between their shoulder blades housed in a vest worn under the shirts however some individuals may track their own ‘stats’ and Whoop appears to be the current trend (led by Cristiano) You can see it under the tape on the wrist here -...

    Jewellery / Wrist Tape

One of the latest trends I’ve seen this year in my games is players wearing Whoop bands covered by tape Had one game where an entire team had them on (club were obviously using them to collect data) -didn’t go down well when I asked them all to remove them. Doesn’t help that I’ve seen a few...

    Bournemouth v Newcastle

“Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent. • A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned. “Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of...

    Bournemouth v Newcastle

See video of Joelinton incident on goalkeeper in yesterdays game for the answer to this question His reason is very obvious - he’s absolutely not challenging for the ball, his sole intention is stopping the goalkeeper from releasing the ball quickly and starting a counter attack

    Manager caution

I think this has been taken to some quite extreme lengths. In reality - is a manager of a team in possession likely to give the referee dissent? Probably not. Any dissent happening in play, is most likely to be from a manager who feels they have been ‘wronged’ - i.e. thinking their player...

    Manager caution

And to add to that - last thing you need after stopping the game to caution is to set an IDFK in front of dugouts and most likely have to explain why it’s an IDFK and why it’s on the boundary line (regardless of where ball actually was) Let game continue and come to natural stoppage, run over...

    Player removes shirt before scoring...

We are to not stop play but tell the player who has removed his shirt and is bearing down on goal that he must leave the FOP to correct the equipment and can then re-enter once you have checked. Meanwhile the goalkeeper scoops up the ball and we continue the game. And of course because we...

    Returning to refereeing?

Im not with Manchester FA but I’m from not far away. The reality is that as a L6 there’s limited opportunities where you will be out regularly as the referee in a team 3. However, there is an U21 North West League that operates teams of 3 in its top division where you could be in the middle (but...

    EURO 2024 Final - Spain V England

In stark contrast though I was impressed with Felix’s Fox 40 Mini on Wednesday night so ordered myself one. Typically flit between Valkeen and Fox 40 Classic
