Man City v BVB

Pen given to city, no contact but rodri goes down holding his face, yellow given on the pitch. VAR steps in to overturn the pen but the yellow stands? Absolute travesty of the rules which needs overturning.

Little later ederson is doing keep ups outside the box, he goes to boot it and Bellingham takes it off his toes and is about to slot it in when ref blows up for a foul. Surely ref should wait 2 seconds at least so VAR can get involved? For me it wasn't a foul in the first place.

My initial reaction was that he gave the yellow for dissent because there was a long delay between the foul and then Can's protests

The ref is, as they say in the business, having one. Not complaining too much because of the luck we’ve had in recent years, but it’s not a penalty on Rodri (yellow for dissent for Can maybe?) and not a foul on Ederson.

A FIFA qualified official really should not be making that sort of error I'm afraid. In fairness I suppose its only human nature to blow as soon as you think there is a foul but it definately cost Dortmund a valid goal.

Fair play to Jenas calling it not a foul right away and he's high up in the stands!

Yeah unfortunately, the disallowed goal is not just going to cost Dortmund but it will cost the ref too.

On one hand, I’m happy to see the ref make a decision on his own without wanting to use VAR however must agree he gives a second and the goal stands.

I also noticed his watch flashing goal. I’ve never seen this only ever the red GLT watches. Anyone have more info on this? EB30E5DB-2A58-41D7-A974-7875E3AF6EE0.jpeg

I highly doubt it will cost the ref. High profile Refs never seem to have action taken against them for on the field decisions.

Strange he didn't wait for VAR to help/decide, especially as the only play after the 'foul' was to roll the ball into an empty net.

In his defence, in real time on the pitch it's quite understandable as it looks like Jude has steamed in and fouled the keeper. Letting it go and checking with VAR might have been wise, you might as well use technology if you've got it but fair play for going with his conviction.

Technically, is it a careless challenge? He's charging in fast, studs down in the end but well over knee height during the tackle.

i mean that literally happened to this ref when he get a decision wrong in a play off between northern ireland and switzerland a few years ago leading to him missing the world cup or euros, cant remember which it was

The consequences for these are not high profile or very visible to public. It's usually not about being demoted or stood down, but more so on missing out on rewards they would have otherwise received.

Thoughts on this? I'm sure this happens behind the scenes sometimes, but in the tunnel in clear view of the cameras and opposing players? Not a good look.
If there was no camera there's no story. We all know it goes on. Just so happens that this time it was caught.

I can see why people are saying it shows favouritism or bias if you but in my eyes there's no story here and people are just using it to bash officials.

Last night overall was another poor night for officials. The Bellingham disallowed goal and the missed foul on Mane at one end (with a goal 20 seconds later at the other) were both obvious errors and totally pivotal in the matches. That VAR is there and was not used or not able to be used for either suggests that the protocol is also fundamentally flawed. I thought these were the kind of game-changing referee gaffs that VAR was supposed to eradicate.

Add the killjoy waiting for goal checks and it was poor TV too! On one hand I am glad I waited until now to buy the ECL subscription, but the footy channel packages are less and less attractive for me. Product is damaged IMHO.

Mane also lucky not to get sent off for kicking out/knee high attack on RM player when the ball was already gone. Although he did get a yellow for mouthing out for ages.

I don't get why in the goal situation why VAR can't step in and award it when we think logically. Yes the whistle has gone, but there was no additional play other than the ball crossing the line. A rule such as a 3 second rule after the whistle has blown to rule out trigger happy ref mistakes?

i dont think that's a good idea, just get it right, delay the whistle so it can be reviewed
