Liv v Utd

The Referee Store
I agree that it’s probably a foul on the keeper, but what can VVD do? He wouldn’t be expected to not challenge, his eyes were on the ball when jumping for the header.

Its very very rare in English football at any level to see dissent like that. I can't remember an incident like that since Michael Oliver vs Buffon.

I think it was correct to rule out the goal.
Van Dijk has barged him after de gea has caught him which made him drop it

Agreed. He has jumped like he would in the centre circle. Hasn't lead with his arms or blocked DDG.

Not even questioned if that is 2 outfield players in the middle of the pitch.

Yes but two outfield players don't provoke the discussion of a player being in control - ie in the GK's hands. I'm not saying I agree with VAR or otherwise but apples/oranges.

Not a foul on the GK but car crash reffing not to give it (if you get what I mean)
Not C&O but VAR reversed it based on the intensity of the protest. Disgrace that Maguire wasn't sin binned

I actually think he has played on because United get the ball after the foul, only for Lindelof to give it away. VAR has got him out of a hole there.

It doesn't really matter what Van Dijk was looking at, he has jumped into De Gea while he was off the ground and therefore it is a foul. He wouldn't have dropped the ball had he not been hit in the air, so even if you don't think it is an obvious foul it is a lot safer to give it. One of those that no one will remember you for it you give a defensive free kick, but there sure as hell will if you don't and a winning goal is scored from it.

Im saying that he’s kept his eyes on the ball which suggests his intention isn’t to foul De Gea, it’s to win the ball.

Intent doesn't matter anymore though.

Is a pretty clear-cut foul considering the keeper control rules thesedays.

Agreed. Good example of why it is risky to try playing any advantage in the defensive half IMO. Though, why he didn't just pull it back and say it was a late whistle? Would have saved him so much aggro.

It's not so much a foul as in 2 outifeld players go up for a an aerial challenge. But you can't challenge the keeper when he is in control of the ball. A keeper is in control if he touches the ball with any part of the hand. So as soon as DDG handles it to catch it VVD can no longer challenge him for it, thus committing the offence.

I think VAR increases the risk of this unsavoury sight, to be honest. Because the need and ability to change a decision is immediately available, and seems in common ownership (rather than at the referee's discretion) despite directives to the contrary.

It's a foul for me. But I am not sure if it was C&O. English football has let ones worse than this go. Many time with VAR in recent games.

Has anyone noticed all replay in VAR are slow mo now? I havn't seen one single VAR replay at full speed this season. At least not on TV anyway.

Back in the day these challenges were set up to smash the keeper. Perfectly understandable that they are generally always given as a foul. CP seemed like he saw it and expected the clearance. VAR saved his bacon today but a bad initial no-call!! Better second half but I’d give him a 7/10 for his first half frailties.

At least I now know what players will expect me to give for such challenges like this.

Tbh I struggle to see it being trully careless and DDG and the rest of the team only kick off when Liverpool score - if the clearance had gone out of the box I bet they would have just got on with the game.

Horrible to see them crowd the ref and all should be visibly booked on the FOP not fined discreetly after the event.

(And I'm a United fan)
