So far think Taylor is having a great game.
Fantastic advantage which led to a further attack and penalty for United.
Only let down is the drop ball procedure.
Stops play outside Chelsea area with Man Utd in possession for head injury occurred 10 seconds earlier.
Restarted by dropping the ball to Chelsea who gave it back by booting it down the pitch to the keeper.
Surely it should have been dropped to a United player from where the ball was when game stopped.

I've not watched the game, but that doesn't sound right.

The ball shod be dropped for the team in possession/that last touches the ball. Unless play is stopped when the ball is in the area, in which case it should be dropped to the keeper

Rashford puts ball in the back of the net and assistant flags (correctly) for offside (he was about 3-4 yards offside)....
Only thing that bugs me with this is that a United player was fouled as the ball was put through to Rashford. Surely no advantage (I would have thought he'd have played advantage if he thought Rashford could have been onside) would mean he brings it back for the clear foul. VAR checks to confirm what every person knew was offside and the ball is given to Chelsea for a free kick, despite Manchester United not getting anything from a clear, clumsy, foul.

Ironic as the next post, my last, was about the free kick on what looks like Pogba (couldn't remember when I typed it up) as the ball went to Rashford. Can understand if he thought was onside to play advantage but as soon as that flag went up, he should have given the free kick to United.

Taylor has ignored several clear cautions.
Obv from the "Michael Oliver school" of a caution isn't the same in the 1st min as the 89th min.
The drop ball incident and the failure to award a clear free kick and caution during tee offside incident mean he is lacking in a relatively simple game for me

That's one of the nuances of VAR. I suspect they were checking for a red card for Kovacic's challenge on Pogba rather than the offside, but even though it would have clearly showed a foul they can't tell the referee that. That's all I can think of as that offside decision would only take a second to check.

I was waiting for the drop ball when play was stopped for the head injury and thought hes got that wrong.

It should have been given back to United player.

On that, how far would a Chelsea player have to be away from the ball, if Talyor had just dropped it to a United player could he have had a shot ?

The stadium announcer said ‘... no offside. ... no foul’, so I presume they checked both and somehow didn’t see it as a free kick which is just baffling

When they are checking for stuff after a goal, does VAR look for any type of foul, or do they only look for "obvious errors"?

They would need to be 4m away. I think he could have a shot but would need to touch at least 2 players for goal to be counted.

At what point can the opposition close down a dropped ball. When it leaves referee's hand, when it hits the ground or when the player touches it?

Madness, most blatent foul and yellow card.

As I said, they cannot check for a foul or caution as VAR protocol doesn't allow that. All they could check for there is SFP, once VAR says no to that they can't then say "but give a free kick and a caution instead".
