I understand what you are saying but given the situation (and I was there), I would have gone with the assistant on this occasion and sold it as a quick flag. It was not as obvious as you may think. It was a quick flag which the referee ignored. The consequence of what happened in the rest of the game regarding credibility justified my opinion on it, the referee lost the game. This offside situation has happened to me in the past and I have gone with the assistant and sold it as a quick flag, then had a word with the assistant to delay and it did not effect my match control.
