Gel Supplements

Running a 5K at the weekend, I developed a cramp on an uphill stretch between the 2K and 3K marks. Pushed through it and it wore off within the 3-4 range, and still posted a PB time.

Now, I've seen some referees and road runners carrying some kind of gel supplements in sachets in their pockets, some claiming they assist with busting these cramps quickly when they come on and allowing them to finish strongly.

The thing is, do they really work or is it a placebo effect? I'd appreciate a steer from anyone who knows or has used them, and if it's a thumbs-up, a recommendation of brand.

You don't need gel supplements for 5k, or even 10k for that manner.

Get your nutrition and hydration right before the race. And after. Job done.

As above. The body has no need or want for the contents of a gel. There is more than sufficient t within the body and the endless energy drinks (either red bull based or lucazade based) that will be consumed.

Only need to start thinking that way of you are exceeding your calorific intake and stores to a point where bodily functions would be affected.

10k or a game is nothing that can not be completed with good hydration.

NB cover between 5.5 and 7 miles / 9 and 12km per game.
