And the referee is wearing shin pads. Doesnt look young or newly qualified, but wearing shin pads.

Strange one. May be something he 'likes' to do? Unsure. I mean, there is nothing to say we can't wear shin pads.. But still, slightly puzzling.

Was he a particularly atrocious ref, by that I mean so bad he's liable to being kicked on the shins repeatedly?

Ive seen some strange things whilst watching football, but never a referee wearing shin pads. Maybe he was warned about the teams kicking off and wanted to protect himself? Could he have been one of the players, and got lumbered with refereeing as the appointed referee failed to show up?

It looked like he was the appointed referee, he had a full referees kit on with FAMOA badge and everything.The players noticed but nobody said anything. He was such an eccentric character, no one really understood what he was doing, but surprisingly he managed to keep the game under control and although unexpected, the players actually showed him respect. Its a strange old world.
