The Ref Stop

After the match

The Ref Stop
Blow the final whistle, have about 2 players shake your hand while you ignore the rest of the comments stating how bloody useless you are, and wait half an hour to be paid ;)

In all seriousness, thank any assistants and as soon as you're paid get yourself home.. unless its a higher standard of football with a clubhouse and changing rooms. Then take your time :D

After the final whistle.

If I am NAR I go and get the spare ball nearest me if there is one then...

Round my way I (or we) go to the half way line at the edge of the centre circle, facing the crowd (if there is a crowd on one side) or facing the benches if there are no punters. Ref in the middle, AR1 to the left, AR to the right.

We then stand politely - no silly body language, no loud comments, flags rolled. The teams come either side of the circle, typically captains take turns leading a quick clap/chant then there is a queue to shake hands. At the higher levels the handshake is more organised and one team goes first. At lower levels they all want off sharpish but normally all the players will shake at least with each other.

We can tell if we've had a blinder at lower levels at because every single player will wait/queue to shake with us. This happened in one out of two futsal games yesterday - not a bad percentage - considering there was a debated DOGSO RC;)

After that, follow the players off to the changing rooms, if available. If the game has involved heated incidents and the players are still arguing - on these rare occasions you may want to stay within earshot or with a view of the players until they are tucked away and getting changed. Same outside - if they are getting changed at the touchline, if there has been aggro you may want to wait until the players have left the playing area.

...and yes, if with ARs, of course, thanks, feedback, comments;)

My routine is generally shake anyone’s hand who offers. Thank my club assistants and collect my flags. Once back in the changing room, do any misconduct reporting on the whole game system, get changed, collect my fee and go home.

Very funny Harry I like that.

How are you - season going well?

Standard varies.. over were, as soon as the FT whistle has blown, the assistants meet myself have the minority shake our hands.., we have the stewards come meet us to escort us off and we wait for the players to head down the tunnel - just incase anything breaks out we are still in sight to see it.

Don't switch off! Remember that your responsibility regarding misconduct doesn't end until you're off the pitch, and your responsibility regarding your own conduct and how you come across doesn't end until you leave the ground. That includes being firm but polite if you need to go and hunt down your flags or any cash owed.

Shake hands, thank the CARs for assistance, congratulate the managers on a good game, get your money and get out of there!

Or if the competition rules state after match hospitality, get involved!

Wait on the field. If you have NAR's, they should be RUNNING over to you. If not, hopefully the CAR's will come to you. Don't initiate handshakes, but accept a handshake if offered. Wait on the field briefly so the players are starting to leave so you're not walking off the field with the players - that's inviting abuse. Of course if it's really, really, really nasty you might just want to get out of there. Try not to walk too close to where the teams are gathered, because that also invites the comments that are about you but designed for you to overhear. Which, of course, are fully cardable. So we try to avoid that situation.

Shake the hands of your AR's on the field. Walk off the field calmly (don't bother looking at the spectators mouthing off).

As an AR, if the game is finished tensely and there has been some dissent or spectator abuse leading to full time, get to your referee as soon as you can. Forget about collecting balls, hand shakes on the way etc. Sprint to the referee before any players do.
Similarly as a referee, in the same situation, get your ARs as soon as you can and walk away without waiting around. If you are offered handshakes on the way respond with smile and don't get into any discussions. Get to your dressing room or if you don't have one to a neutral safe place like canteen or somewhere where you are protected.

If you don't have a dressing room, never leave your bag in a place which leaves you vulnerable at the end of the game. A common mistake is to leave it in or near one of the technical areas.
