Hi all, I have just completed my 1st blog on my game on Saturday. I plan on doing this for every game (hopefully) for the rest of the season. I am doing this to pass pm hints and tips to other referees that I pick up and also to see how I progress during the season and to look back at games and remember things and how i have improved (hopefully!). I hope you enjoy reading it. http://thematchoffical.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/my-1st-pre-season-friendly.html
Sulley Muntari steals yellow card from referee Antonio Damato and shows it to Mario Balotelli, the AC Milan player who took off his shirt after scoring the 1-0 against FC Turin in the 85th of the match. Referee Antonio Damato, … Continue reading → The post Muntari steals yellow card and books Balotelli appeared first on Football: Dutch Referee Blog for match officials. Continue reading...
There have been few idol figures in football when it comes to the world of refereeing but if you should ask anyone who they think the best referee ever is, Pierluigi Collina would win by a country mile. It poses a second question. Will we ever find someone like him who holds almost an elite status? Who do you think the best current modern referee is and I think slowly but surely, Howard Webb is stepping out into the limelight. Despite what was described as a “blemish” for the beautiful game’s 2010 World Cup final that Howard Webb took charge of, Webb’s refereeing has become less and less controversial and he has cemented his figure with players on the field including television viewers who are now quite well aware of his name. These...
Rooney in offside position, so shouldn’t the Manchester United goal not be cancelled? My twitter account @DutchReferee exploded last night when I posted a tweet that Phil Dowd correctly allowed the goal Manchester United goal against Preston North End in the FA Cup. 62 retweets and 17 favorites (and still counting). In this case study […] Continue reading...
To give you a bit of a teaser/backstory, have a read of Third Blind Mouse’s piece on this situation. https://thirdblindmouse.wordpress.com/2014/03/12/dogso-h-or-offside-i-cant-decide/ People may think that the laws/rules of sports are simple. This scenario can show just how mind-boggling a scenario in football can be. I thought the natural thing to make this clear is to draw […] Continue reading...

Hi all, I've started a new blog. It is the first I've ever written so I'm still getting the hang of things! Here are my first couple of offerings: http://thefacebehindtheref.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/hello-im-james-and-ill-be-your-referee.html http://thefacebehindtheref.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/last-nights-game.html Enjoy. Comments welcome! :)
They say it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks but I have to disagree as this old dog tried a new trick this weekend and it worked a treat. I confess that I am a thief, a magpie if you like, of other people's valuable ideas and after considering them, I often drag them into my professional and refereeing life, getting good use out of them. I do not take credit for the advice of others who have taken the time to pass their advice to me and always acknowledge the source. Most of the time, I'm so busy storing up these other ideas that I forget who mentioned it originally, but I always mention it came to me from "a friend". On Saturday I assessed a referee and one of the things I noticed was when he had a free kick outside the penalty...
So in rather a completely unexpected but pleasant surprise, the new Laws of the Game is out today. Ordinarily it comes out on July 1st but they released it early in order for it to be in effect for the FIFA World Cup. The new Laws of the Game don’t take effect for any running competitions now ordinarily but would for any starting after today. Nice new shot of Bjorn Kuipers (NED) smiling. We don’t have too many of those cover photos. It will be interesting to see what games he gets this World Cup. Minor changes all in all pertaining to approval of headscarves and a stricter mandate on slogans on clothing. Here is the memo of changes which makes it easier to identify the precise changes...
