The Ref Stop

Youth coinflip

During my first game last weekend, the home side told me not to do a coin flip as they were fine with the away side taking first half kick off. I let this slide but not I’m wondering if I should make sure I do one in future games.

For reference, it was U11 tournament (although I don’t believe scores were being recorded or anything), Scottish top flight team vs some other local ones.

Thanks for the responses. They were fine with the home team taking KO and didn’t bat an eyelid but I did think right after I should have done one anyway.

Will make sure to do so tomorrow!

Always apply the law. They might say they don't want a coin toss, but if they then get disgruntled by your decisions they could chuck you under the bus by reporting you for not having one, and it then becomes your word against theirs. Can't remember his name, but a senior referee in England got himself suspended for doing rock paper scissors instead of a coin toss.

That’s correct & came about because I think he forgot to take a coin out. It was a Women’s Super League game and he received a 21 day suspension, which I think he appealed (I do not know the outcome).

He was doing it regularly, you rarely get caught the first time.
He turned into a useful mule for ref support.

That really doesn't work, though. You're allowing one team to dictate to the other team, something that they're not entitled to dictate. The team that wins the toss is given a choice of either kicking off or deciding which goal to attack in the first half. There's nothing in the laws that says (or even hints that) the home team just gets to choose how the game starts, without having won the toss first.

Guys. It’s an u11 game without scores being kept.

Saying that, apply law and do the coin toss and you cover yourself fully.

Remembered this thread this morning while I was sending someone some Sixes rules…

That said, it was a kids tournament so competition rules may have just said “first/home listed team kick off” as some do, just to speed it all up and rattle through it on the day, and that particular team may have said “ah let them take it” (not being too bothered). You pick your battles in those circumstances.

“Normal” games though, flip a coin like the good app book says you must. 👍🏻
