Big game in the Step 4 Play-Off race 😉

Anywhere else on the pitch and it's probably orange, however, particularly at this level, the penalty is a major surprise.

Don't think the attacker does anything wrong in the second incident

Haven't watched the full highlights, linked below

The Ref Stop
I watched all the highlights for context. The two incidents do look like clangers. For the PK the GK clearly knees the ball and the attacker clatters into him. Looks like a defensive FK not penalty. Then the really odd one, GK catches ball, is bumped by the attacker for a tsp in. Looks like it should be s defensive FK though the reverse angle would be better. In both cases I am interested what the referee thinks he has seen?

First incident Looks like a foul on the keeper.

Second one, the attacker hasn’t intentionally played the ball out of keepers hands but it’s certainly safe refereeing to give indirect freekick and it’s also what football expects (sorry 🤦‍♂️😬)

Fwiw the twitter account says the referee told thought it was the defender who 'collided' with the goalkeeper.

Why IDFK?
Foul on the GK while in control of the ball is DFK ;)

Attackers are not allowed to challenge the GK when they have possession of the ball. So any contact, even if not reaching the normal foul threshold, should be penalized

Yeah I think you’re right.

I was penalising for this:

“prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from the hands or kicks or attempts to kick the ball when the goalkeeper is in the process of releasing it”

But seems incorrect the more I think.

For me this wasn’t a challenge. More an accidental coming together that has knocked the ball out of keepers hands. It could be argued that the keeper needs to be more careful with the ball in his hands 🤷‍♂️

The attacker is challenging the GK for the ball, GK gets to it first and has the ball under control in their hands at the end of the challenge. It is a fairly textbook scenario one of the most common where an attacker will be penalised for this.

I can understand the first pen from the angle - initially looked like a follow through from the keeper, but really wasn’t - was clattered after getting the ball.

The second KMI is a real pity, everyone expects a DFK for defending team.

Does the 7 move, before the contact, after the goalkeeper is in possession? For me he's stopped challenging before the goalkeeper catches it. The 7 gets shoved in the same direction the goalkeeper is moving.

edit: After seeing behind the goal cam, scratch that.

Feel very bad for the ref here, we've all had those days I'm sure.... Definitely not a penalty, but easy to see why he made the mistake. The other one, angle feels inconclusive to me, but even if it were technically correct to allow it to stand you are doing yourself absolutely no favours and nobody is ever going to complain if it's chalked off.....

I can't disagree with what has been written here.

1 I think is not a penalty but I can understand what he thinks he has seen. For me his problems start with his positioning from the restart. The ball is only going to one place and he is as far from that location as he possibly can be. Expected position would be opposite side of the pitch closer to the drop zone. He then had a better angle, better proximity on the challenge and less adjustments needed to see it

2nd one just has to be an offence and a free kick to the defending team. I think even the scoring team are expecting it to be given

Ref has had a disaster. Big impact unfortunately. Such is life as a Ref or as a football team
Not one of us at any level is immune to that risk coming to fruition every time we cross the white line. I haven't experienced anything as uncomfortable as what this ref would've experienced, but then I've never reffed such an important game at that level

We’ve all had these days. I’m sure if the referee in question has seen the clips, he’ll be kicking himself.

How kind of the team to share it for all the public to see rather than biting their tongue or sharing it privately.

I’m sure they made no mistakes in the game whatsoever.
