Did a mens game today with a team who wanted to play football and the other who were there it seems to p me off.anyway in the 79th minute a player i showed a second yellow too attempted to headbutt me but failed terribly .His manager who was doing the line ran on and started shouting obscenities at me .i felt alot of tension out there and felt the need to abandon

If you feared for your safety, then yes, abandoning was the right thing to do.

What Ross said. In a situation like that, you have to think about yourself over everything else. If your safety is compromised, then you abandon, and let the CFA deal with it.

That sound's only fair Andy, especially if someone has tried to 'drop the nut'. The guy who got sent off should get hammered by the CFA for that because physically abusing a referee is as bad as it, someone throw the book at that man ;).

Totally right Andy, doesn't matter in the end if the player failed terribly and I'm glad he did, what with his actions and the actions of the manager there is more than enough there for anyone to be worried about their safety and as soon as you get to that point it is time to abandon.

there is no right or wrong time to abandon a game however if you think you are physically threatened you are well within your rights, i have always said if someone swings for me im going to give them back the same and see if they like it, one time a manager shouted at me for flagging a penalty that got them relegated "ill see you in the car park after the game" my repsonse after the final whistle was give me 10 mins to get changed and i will meet you in the the car park suprise suprise he didnt turn up..however i am 6ft 4 and 16 stone and he was about 5ft 9

That reminds me of a few officials we have around here

Being a much smaller official than CoventryRef, I have not got the option to take the "tough guy" routine. I would have most certainly abandoned the match. I had a similar incident a few weeks ago. It was a Senior Men's A competition (top level we have in the province) and Player A decided to punch Player B in the back of the head; I sent him off (without any argument from his team or manager) and he came to my face (standing a good 2 inches taller than I am), and grabbed my wrist. I told him sternly to "let go" and he did, only to be chooed away by one of his teammates. When he realized that he wasn't going to get to stay on, he began to literally wrestle with his teammate to get at me. He didn't get at me (thankfully) because his teammate managed to hold him back and escort him off the field. To my surprise, when I blew full 90, he came back to the pitch and started walking towards me only to be intercepted and dragged away by another teammate. His hearing is in a week's time.
