"Give us the ball I fancy a run!"
Oh those words fill me with dread. Doing under 14's this weekend on a really big pitch, not quite full size, but big for these lads. The number of times I heard the home teams left winger say that it would just fill me with dread. He was like lightening and the away team didnt seem to think putting anyone in his way was the best idea, so he'd pick the ball up and be off like a bolt! It was an utter killer keeping up with him all the time! Plus the worst part was with the kids normally the opening 10 minutes is a frenzy of action and then alot of walking around as they are shattered, but this kid had brilliant engine on him as well and was up and down that flank for the entire game. At the end I told him if I ref him again this season he needs to take it easy on me, and he then told me he was carrying a knock so wasnt really at full speed all game!
