Sheffield Wednesday vs Stoke City - Sam Allison

I was at this one and there were so many talking points around decisions I thought it was worth a thread. As a Wednesday fan we probably got the rub of the green with the decisions, but be interested in views from others. Times in the video below ...

0:30. Bernard makes a complete mess of a pass played back to him and pulls the Stoke attacker back. Initially I thought Wednesday's 6 Iorfa was round on the cover, but having watched the replay I'm not so sure now and without the foul the attacker would have had a clear run on goal. Referee went yellow for SPA, as you can see the Stoke players did not agree with this.

0:50. Presumably disappointed that he hasn't yet got the Christmas period off, Bernard rinses and repeats. This time there is definitely a covering defender, so can't really be any argument with the second caution.

1:40: Wednesday keeper makes a save, balls goes to the edge of the penalty area where there is a coming together of two players. I thought penalty straight away, having watched it back I still think so. Referee's position couldn't have possibly been any better, but for me the Stoke player got there first and was fouled.

2:23. Cross comes in, Wednesday 11 Bannan goes to head it and it clearly hits his outstretched arm. I'd gone to the toilet at this time, but heard a collective groan and from what I was told everyone in the ground assumed it would be a penalty, but nothing given.

3:05. Cross comes in again, collision between defender, attacker and keeper. When the whistle went pretty much everyone assumed it was a foul on the keeper, but the outcome was a penalty and Wednesday 3 Low cautioned. Watched this multiple times and I'm just not seeing a penalty, there's perhaps slight contact but nowhere near enough for a foul as far as I can see.

Only seen sky highlights.

Thought first yellow was dogso. 2nd yellow was a nailed on (2 games off now after unfortunately being dismissed V Luton).

And thought stoke were unlucky not to get two pens and lucky to get the 3rd.

And the Wednesday lot still aren't happy with the ref over on Owlstalk! 🙂

Yeah, think they need to realise that whilst he made mistakes most were in our favour.

Don't think I've ever been at a game where both sets of fans were singing you don't know what you're doing and you're not fit to referee in unison. Aside from the decisions, I'd have huge concerns about his body language, he just doesn't look at all confident and allowed himself to be surrounded by players time and time again.

That last paragraph explains the penalty for me. First I can understand the call, the second is inexplicable. Doubts crept in over the other calls and that psychological pressure he put on himself to ensure he got the next big one correct has left him on a hiding to nothing.

I’m sure we’ve all had those moments.

Let's hope he can put that one behind him! Agree with @JamesL and his assessment. First yellow was DOGSO imo, but he got the second one right. Stoke should have had 2 pens in that game by the looks of it, and the one they got wasn't one of them.

Poor Sam. Tough game.

First foul looks like clear DOGSO. AR needs to be weighing in here imo.

Handball is really clear but again I think the ref needs AR to help him out. Ref doesn’t seem to have an angle to see contact with hand and AR should be bang in line or thereabouts with Bannan.

The other penalty shout I can’t decide on. Defender steps across the attacker inviting the contact. Not convinced it’s a penalty or a DEF FK. But genuinely no idea what’s correct.

Last one there’s a definite tug by defender which is probably not enough for a penalty if attackers feet are planted but in mid air any pull will have a bigger impact. I’m ok with pen here.

Great highlights from a refereeing perspective.

I'm with you @RichardRef I think thats a pen as the attacker is impacted in the air.....
As for the others, isn't attacker a long way from goal for DOGSO? And Bannan (Barry Bannan)* is a def pen for HB!

*it's what Sky always call him......

People around where I sit know I'm a referee, so fair to say I got asked a lot of questions during this game. Not that I could answer most of them.

One area where Sam struggles, and I've seen this in previous games, is he just doesn't look confident when making decisions. As seen on the video he lets himself get surrounded on all the controversial decisions and doesn't once take any action against it. I'm sure that will be something his coaches are working with him on.

He did an Ipswich game a while ago and if agree l, he doesn't give off the aura of confidence
