Refereeing Basketball...

Level 6 Referee
Morning all,

Just thought id throw this question out there to the years of experience in the forum. I'm not new to refereeing but you can always improve!

I've had a couple of Sunday League / Youth games recently where the quality has been really poor and with winter conditions, it has ended up being a lump it job box to box. Midfielders should have stayed in bed. Now my question I guess is, particularly if you're unfortunate enough to be being observed in such a game, what advice do we have regarding positioning? Because the manual goes out the window if you want any credibility or dont have iron man lungs...

Cheers.

If you are a Level 6 (as shown) you will only have a Match Day Coach watching if you have applied for promotion to Level 5.
All you can do is to anticipate as best you can, perhaps keeping to a comparatively narrow diagonal.
MDC's will not expect miracles 😁

Yeah sorry i did mean MDC, i'd like to think once being observed down the line at a higher level, that the quality wouldn't be so poor so wouldn't be a concern. Even with diags, its sometimes just like a bleep test ha. Just feels so ugly at times running back and forth, especially on heavy winter grass.

You're right though, i guess MDC would take the structure of the game into consideration.

I have to ask a question that's been bugging me.... totally unrelated to the thread.

I saw your username and presumed you were a darts fan (with reference to the Michael Smith / MVG 9 darter incident - 'Michael may miss and Michael may hit etc etc')

Then I looked and you had made 1 post in 2019 on this forum, then didn't post again until 2025.

Bearing in mind the infamous Wayne Mardle quote is as recent as early 2023.

Therefore I have 3 possible explanations...

  • You signed up in 2019 under a different username, made 1 post, then asked to change your username before posting again in 2025.
  • Your username is nothing to do with the above incident and is a matter of pure coincidence
    or my favourite...
  • You are a time traveller who travelled back to 2019 to create your account and make a solitary post so that one day I would see this and ask this very question.
Please confirm my suspicions?

i would relate 'i cant speyk' to some very famous (infamous?) rugby league commentary actually
This would imply a 4th possibility whereby actually Wayne Mardle was only quoting a Rugby League commentator at the time of the 2023 'best leg of darts ever' and the whole thing went totally over my head.

Being from Northampton, I have to ask... what's Rugby League anyway?

Haha, i created the account when i passed correct, then COVID happened and i kind of went off the idea. Last 2 seasons ive been casually refereeing again and got the bug for it now. "I cant Speyk" is in reference to the Castleford v Wigan commentary from an old rugby league video. The original "iCantSpeyk"
