The Ref Stop

Never turn your back on the GK

The Ref Stop
Oops, I don't see any offence by the attacker there, the keeper has just run into him and dropped the ball. Certainly a very big lesson to never turn your back and assume all is safe.

True but for all the referee knows the attacker could have snatched the ball out of the keeper's hands and thrown it into the goal.

His chances of getting a critical decision right is only 50% and he knows it. Lesson learnt the hard way.

I learnt this early in my refereeing and fortunately it kind of didnt cost me anything (a missed yellow card). The player deliberately recklessly charged the keeper to purposely earn a yellow card (to accumulate 5 yellows). He later earned himself a DTR yellow on a throw in.

Very simply the ref has to decide if this is an accidental coming together or a challenge for the ball. If it is a challenge it is a foul since NO challenges for the ball can be made while the keeper is in possession.

Even more simply he has to see it first. :D And that's very hard to do if he is not looking at it.
I feel it's a much easier sell for the referee to award the goal with the explanation "sorry lads, I didn't see it" than to guess the decision as he clearly has.

The guy is an ex cat 1 (refereed premier league games I believe). Just shows it can happen to anyone.

FWIW I think he somehow gets to the right decision. Although the striker doesn’t appear to make much movement towards him the keeper has full control of the ball and it would be sensible for match control to call the indirect free kick for preventing keeper from releasing the ball.

If we allow this goal we can almost guarantee that the next time the keeper has ball in hands he will employ all Sorts of nefarious ways to protect himself which we can do without from a match control standpoint.

It’s one of those things we are always told not to do, probably many of us are guilty of it from time to time, here’s what happens when it goes wrong.

Don’t turn your back
Absolutely. When alone, keep as many players as possible and the action area in view at all times. Always walk ceremonial free kicks to the outside. Basics.

Always remind ARs to watch players at key times, like after goals.
