Mark Clatternburg Overlap Interview

Really agreed with some of his points there at the end about context being needed for when to apply which rules- but still think its impossible to explain this concept to the general public without it appearing like bias. Seemed a decent interview overall anyway, wondering what others thought of it

The Ref Stop
Cynic in me is trying to understand why he's doing the media rounds. Overlap and The Athletic podcast interviews in the space of a week.

It's interesting but only the Forest story is not in his book.

Sadly I find his voice and manner annoying. I loved as a referee at the top. But that was awkward. I just don’t think people are laughing with him. Unfortunately I don’t think his too school for cool act is doing “us” any favours.

We really need more Mike Dean on the air.

Is it a deliberate plot by the media to give oxygen to e.g. Riley and Clattenberg because they grate people, have loose tongues and in the end stir sh*t?

First time listening to The Overlap. The intro/sting they use is from a band I used to work with (The Presets). Wonder if they know - seems an ‘out there’ choice 😂

As I see more and more clips of this I like him less. Somehow his referee persons does not match his retired-ref-making-friends persona and it makes me itchy.

A while ago I heard an interesting rumour about him since he retired, and now all of his recent media escapades make more sense.

Class referee, just a shame he's bringing down the opinion/reputation of referees with him.

Sadly which former referee out there that has done media has actually enhanced the reputation of referees?

Probably only Howard Webb I can think of who seems to be able to handle the media but even he gets mocked(wrongly in my view) since he became the head of the PGMOL.

Issue is, referees can't win, if they are seen as too defensive and defending the refs all the time(Dermot Gallagher) then they get criticized, if they come across as arrogant and full of themselves like Halsey and Clattenburg then it goes too far the other way.

On a side note, I don't mind Clattenburg in the ref analyst role, I think he does a fair job, it's something I thought Mike Dean would do quite well at but sadly not to be.

Mike Dean. Legend.

Also special word for Bobby Madely. I was lucky enough to hear him speak in a small setting and he was an amazing speaker. He would be a great ambassador for refereeing I think.

I like his honesty same with Jeff Winter and Keith Hackett although not always agreeing with Hackett but I like they speak openly.

His brother too.
I had him as guest speaker for something at my county (can't remember if it were for my promotion season, as a congratulations type event with everyone else who got promoted). He spoke very well. Answered, within reason, any questions. He was due to referee Arsenal i think that weekend so had a few lighthearted cheeky comments thrown his way.
Even spoke about Bobby for a couple minutes, saying how they progressed together as referees.

Have to say, since that day I have good admiration for him as a ref and a person.

No just someone who prefers people to be honest to there own opinion
Hackett couldn't be any less honest with his opinion, he will always go the polar opposite to what the referee did. Even when doing so contradicts what he has previously said when criticising refereeing decisions.
