The Ref Stop

Looking at Social Media

I’ve got one from today that’s direct to the FA’s YouTube channel. Really messy game from some players well out of their depth. No major clangers but probably 15 coulda been fouls where we were just trying to keep it going. I really don’t want to watch but I will.

The Ref Stop
Had two rivals go at it. Mass cons, off the balls fights. I even got neutrals appointed as the fixture always has a mass con.

Been searching both their social medias to see if I am mentioned and not a word. Happy!

You do realise that you’re supposed to make it all about you, right?
Had some strange advice on this one. First half (I am a vocal ref, probably too vocal tbh) I was managing constantly. I thought it was going well. No bookings first half. Game was flowing really well.

My experienced assistant (ex level 3 but dropped down to 5 as he is winding down) told me to shush (he was really respectful). So second half, everything was going fine, but I had reduced my talks to just next to nothing. Then boom mass con. But the second half felt really good.

So I guess I am changing my style a little.

It’s a fine balance. I was told when I was a L5 that I was too vocal. It can annoy players if you’re practically giving a running commentary on the whole game. But on the flip side, if you’re too quiet, it can be perceived as not having a presence or low confidence.

Ultimately what works for one person won’t work for another. It comes down to your personality and also your stature. I’m only 5’8, so never had the physical presence of someone like a Rob Jones. So I had to make up for that by being slightly more vocal. That said, went out with plenty of guys who are Championship/FL now and are similar build to me, and they could be quiet as a mouse.

The key is knowing when to raise your profile and when to blend into the background. I remember watching an interview with Howard Webb in something some years ago, and someone mentioned to him that the best referees are the ones you don’t know are there. His response was this isn’t true. The best referees aren’t seen when they aren’t needed, but are then seen when they need to be.

The lesson? Something about knowing when to shut up and when not to. But I’m waffling 😙

Nah fully agree. The sweet spot.

First few corners or free kicks into the attacking area, let them know you're there. Then you can start letting off a bit. Temperature of the game as well may dictate how much you need to shout.

I find I do the first bit above and then every so often at the drop zone from say a goal kick, I'll let them know I'm there. Just to remind them.

I’m reasonably chatty… but not a commentator. Nice word in passing to a player who seems receptive, explain a simple one, move on, nod at the keeper after a good save… that kinda stuff.

More of a “yeah I do understand / appreciate good football” vibe 😎
