The Ref Stop

Liverpool vs Everton

The Ref Stop
Clearly endangering his opponent and out of control. And not massively helpful for refs trying to educate people that getting the ball isn’t a defence when that’s the case.

Not surprising considering it's Tierney on VAR who never seems to like to overturn decisions when they are subjective.

Sadly Sam Barrott follows the trend of modern day Premier League referees of not issuing a direct red card on the field straight away.

It’s embarrassing and unacceptable that officials haven’t spotted it.

Onfield referee should see it. But I’ve mentioned many times that PGMOL officials seen atrocious at spotting SFP. But as with anything on field, things can be missed

But for someone in the VAR booth to sit and watch replays of that and decide it isn’t SFP is woeful.

I think fans are more forgiving of an offside "goal" that is just a few inches than a shocking challenge like this, just being looked at and still being a yellow!

Think he is very lucky to be on the pitch. A very dark shade of yellow for me. Doesn’t matter if you get the ball… lucky boy imho

Its a clear red card. I can understand how it was seen as yellow on-field as it happened so fast, but it is incomprehensible that a professional referee can watch that from multiple angles and deem that a clear and obvious error hadn't occurred.

I got to worry about Tierney's state of ability if he is seeing that as anything but a red card. Very bad call Paul. Do they take ref's off VAR duty if they screw up?

Of course referees description could play a part and I think when the referee is pretty close and gives a decision it can feel hard as a VAR to intervene but the evidence is all there for a red card, the leg buckles, that tells you how much force there was in the challenge.

As a neutral watching I'm glad Everton have still got 11 men but as someone who thinks VAR is more of a benefit than not, incidents like this does not help.

I am the only referee amongst my mates and I always try and give the ref's p.o.v. On this one, I can understand Sam 's decision, although it is a poor one, but I am genuinely speechless about the non intervention from VAR. Indefensible.

We have had a couple of SG1s at our RA recently. Nothing against them - professional, humble and impressive. From what they have said I can't help wondering whether PGMOL have gone too far with the whole manage the occasion mantra. Put them on my NPL game on Saturday and I bet they both go red without a second thought.

Without doubt this is a major part of it.

If you ever attend a dev evening, they will almost always mention ‘you’re managing an event’. This is all well and good, but sometimes you just have to deal with what you see in front of you. And PGMOL, especially with SFP, have a major issue

Yeah. Howler unfortunately. Paul will not enjoy looking at his phone upon leaving the VAR booth!

Jota should have got a second yellow. Worse dissent immediately after he was cautioned for dissent.

Slightly concerned with some of the standards of refereeing at the moment in the prem. Seem to have dropped a fair bit over the past couple of weeks/in the last month.

Agree in some cases, but in this one look how quickly he gives a free kick and pulls the yellow out. Feels like it was a very instinctive decision that he has just got wrong, I don't think there was enough time for him to think through the potential magnitude of giving a red card so early in a derby.

It is a real pity for Sam Barrott as, aside from this incident, he was outstanding tonight.

Don’t think he handled the situation with Nunez and Pickford very well. Should have left Nunez to be treated off the field and got himself and all the players back playing from the free kick, but it certainly wasn’t an easy game to keep a lid on which he did for most of the game.
