Injury woe

So, bo**ocks, I've got a weird injury, can't run on it and have had to cancel all sporting activities for a while. It's the off season now so I've had to ditch the futsal for a while and I've got until April to get back. I feel pretty down about it right now.

I've had pains in one foot for months but just carried on - turns out I have a textbook Morton's Neuroma - nerve damage behind the toe from the bones getting crushed together - common in runners, from high heels (!), impact sports and court sports. I'm being really careful but e,g. driving sets it off and I still have constant pain at the mo.

A few years ago I tied my boots (not the high heels!) tighter and tighter which probably did not help, as my boots got so loose from so much crabbing running the line, I move about on the balls of my feet generally, but what's set it off this year is I have been playing loads of serious table tennis, up on the balls of my feet, and I've crushed it! As well as 85 matches from April to October.

So, a bit of a PSA, if you get burning pain behind the toes, soreness in the ball of the foot, weird pains in your toes (that aren't long toenails!) then catch this early, because it is really annoying and is permanent damage that needs managing. Argh!

Which Dr. Google says is frequently caused by wearing high heeled pointy shoes 🥿👠👡
Yeah the high heels… and the pointy shoes… which I normally wear running the line.

Crazy thing I was still carrying on regardless. Eat my 8,94s CODA from last month. Now I’m all ice packs, cryo, toe curls and praying i don’t have to have a chunk of my foot cut out. Argh!

I had this same problem quite a few years back and after numerous and unsuccessful sterioid injections I had surgery. At hospital for the morning and out by 4pm and walking around in a strange built up boot for 2 weeks.
Touch wood I've had no issues since and have a neat 'battle scar down the dorsal aspect of my foot.
Plenty of ice and anti inflame for the time being mate! Take it easy!

On one hand - argh - so sorry to hear that - and OMG that's a worry for me... it's been 3 weeks already since finding out and it's still burning. A few months of obvious carrying it before that.

But at the same time... you are the first I have come across who has had the op... so you have been able to run as before... and what, just a numb toe or two?

The numbness soon goes and the feeling returns after 4 - 6 weeks and touch wood it's been great ever since. I get the odd twinge on a very rare occasion but the actual nerve is severed. I was soon back running about.
I actually still.have the scar after all these years.

You had given me so much hope here. But…

I had bad news this week. I had an MRI before xmas and it showed no nerve problem. So the diagnosis was wrong. Instead I have metatarsalalgia and degeneration of the cartalidge. It presents so similarly to Morton’s with weird pains behind the toes and toes themselves.

Caused by overuse - punishing the ball of my right foot, refereeing and assisting contributed but intense ping pong set it off.

Problem for me is that it’s been three months off sport avoiding walking and it started hurting more again before xmas. I waiting to see a specialist but I have a very bad feeling about this. Not good.,
