The Ref Stop

Junior/Youth In the way of the ball

The Ref Stop
In terms of drop ball... It is dropped uncontested for a player of the team who lost possession. Oppositon player must be at least 6 yards away.

You sure. 6 yards?
Law 8.2 - Dropped Ball

Also does it need to be to the team that lost possession. E.g. promising attack. The team keeps possession.

Reading further on this... if the ball is even deflected/brushed onto the ref by a defender and it falls to an attacker, the defender's team gets the dropped ball as the last player that 'touched the ball'.

I'm my earlier years I used to get hit by the ball or get on the way of players at a couple of times a half. Now it's once every few games. I still like to get close to play, when my fitness allows, usually closer than most my peers. I put it down to the ability to read play, but as mentioned above, its about reading play and positiing proactivly as a referee, not as a player. It comes with experience.

I find I get hit by the ball much more in youth football, and even then at the younger end of 11v11 age group. Happens less with experience and better positioning, but still happens more than OA football. I put it down to some of things mentioned - us reading the game and anticipating direction of play/next pass but their ability/strength resulting in miskicks, not enough power/height in pass, panicked clearances etc combined with the fact I'm fitter than a lot of them so end up getting closer to play than intended.

100% @The Gump. A friend called in a favour for his daughter’s U13 team a couple of weekends ago and I must have looked like the most incompetent referee ever. Wasn’t so much “up with play” as it orbiting me 😆
