How Do You Restart Play

This happened during a competitive pre-season friendly between 2 amateur teams. There were no linesmen. The attacking team are awarded a direct free kick about 8 yards outside the penalty box and fairly central. The ref places the ball and marches out the 10 paces and the defending team set up their wall which is a couple of paces inside their own penalty box. The referee takes up a position level with the defenders wall in order to cover any offside. The attacking player runs up and kicks the ball (hard and fast) at the goal but shanks it and it hits the referee on his knee and ricochets into the goal. The "goal" is disallowed but how and where does the referee restart the game? I honestly don't know how to answer this!!

assuming the referee is inside the penalty area then it's a simple drop ball to the keeper from the position where the ball struck the ref

How about if the referee blocked a certain or potential goal? How would play be restarted then?

If they're in the area, then the restart will be the same.

If not it'll likely be a drop ball to the attacking team. If the ball hits the ref and possession changes or it creates a goal scoring opportunity then stop play and restart with a drop ball

Sorry the rest makes sense but if the ref is in the area and blocks the shot which may result in a goal, what is the restart then please?

Oh sorry i thought i’d misunderstood! That’s controversial isn’ it! I know it‘s unlikely the ref would be in the box and block a shot but on the off-chance it happened, i don’t imagine a restart with the keeper wouldn’t go down too well with the attacking team 😅

It's better (i think) than the goal standing!

Sort of like the example from Mexico a few months back where the striker had an open goal and the ref saved it stopping a certain goal.

The referee interaction has no bearing on whether or not a goal would have been scored. It hits the ref - tough!! The restart is one of the 2 options already described. :)

I'd you're getting in the way of a goal or shot then something's gone wrong! In general play it happens from time to time, sometimes because football is unpredictable and others because you're not fit enough to get out of the way or alert enough to see it coming! It'll all come with experience

I did think that too but i saw the instance you mentioned and can see how a freak situation could happen.

Unless the ball goes out of play, in which case restart is in accordance with ball out of play.

But it's black and white in the magic book. The recent drop ball changes and hitting the ref changes are pretty important to know cold--it's not so easy to think fine points when you're already embarrassed that the ball hit you. I'd politely suggest you go back to the magic book and peruse those sections carefully--and stay out of the PA unless there is a really good reason to be there!

In England we are expected to follow play into PA so the advice I would give is to try and stay behind the ball and avoid the width of the goal.

I think that falls under really good reason to be in there. :)

There are absolutely times we need to be there, but I think the DB to the GK means we need to be more thoughtful now than we had to be before the changes. And when in there, particularly aware of not getting in the way.
