Help Hand Ball???

Hi Folks,
I had an incident last weekend that I have come across previously too.
U13 league game, the attacking team are in the opposing teams box and thins are a little scrappy but no fouls committed as the defending team do everything they can to prevent the shots and attempt to clear the ball.
One thing leads to another and 1 of the defending players genuinely looses his balance and falls backwards unaware of where the ball is. He naturally puts his hands behind him to break his fall and touches the ball with no deliberate intention....my question, is this a penalty kick for the attacking team?
I did not award a peno and waved play on as I felt it was unintentional and the ball was never trapped. Curious to the correct decision, cheers.

In the circumstances you describe this would not be handball because the position of the arm is justifiable by the player’s body movement for that specific situation.

IFAB guidance indicates that a handball offence is not committed when a player falls and the ball hits their supporting arm, which is between their body and the ground (unless the ball goes directly into the opponents’ goal or the player scores immediately afterwards, in which case a direct free kick is awarded to the other team).

Thanks lads glad I got it correct. The same situation happened to a team I was managing last season and a younger referee awarded the penalty which ended up costing us a a result. It was a tied game with 4 minutes to go and the penalty gave our opposition the 3 points.....a frustrating morning to say the least 😑

Personally, I set the bar quite high for handball in youth football and only award it if it's definitely deliberate. Yesterday, I reffed an U17 match and there were about 10 appeals for handball, of which I gave none.

In the example above, I'd say it's definitely not a penalty.

A good example of it is Rico Reitz's handball in Borussia M'gladbach vs Bayern. Hands up, touched ball, but it was human instinct, with the ball being hit from so close, going at his head. It's instinctive of trying to block the ball coming at you (except at feet level).

I thought that you said that the Bayern “handball” was a penalty? If you think that one was a handball, then surely this one is too, if going off your logic…
