I have noticed that EFL referees are standing on the edge of the PA at standard penalties now.

In one of the clips i saw today there were 4 players in front of the ref before the ball was struck.

How is the ref supposed to have a clear view of things when standing in such a poor position?

Back to the question:

Is this a sensible place for the referee to stand?
Its difficult to say without knowing the reasoning behind it, and if it actual guidance the officials have had.

I suppose it gives the referee a better view of any encroachment, but I’m not aware of any major complaints in regards to encroachment that was have caused this (although I don’t watch much EFL)

Suppose other justification would be that it gives the referee a better starting position to see any misconduct should there be a rebound from the penalty. Standing in the standard position can mean potentially getting in the way

Thank you.

On a sunday i stand roughly in line with the penalty spot as ball over the line is the most important judgement.

I think a referee who is standing there will have a blocked view (because of on-rushing players) of what's going on in the event the ball doesn't go straight into the goal.

I'm inclined to say it feel less sensible than the "traditional" place. The convention is only to penalise encroachment if it is obvious and impactful, so not having a perfect side-on view in the traditional position shouldn't matter. And on the edge of the PA is a much worse position for judging illegal feinting, or as you rightly say, working out who has played the ball on a rebound.

I suppose the main advantage is it gives you another 5 yards on a save and counter-attack, but my sense of risk/reward suggests that's rare enough that you should be prioritising getting decisions around this penalty right, rather than worrying about a low % chance of a counter.
