The Ref Stop

Dropped or Thrown?

The Ref Stop
Very first tip I got when I started working with a CORE coach was about dropped balls and manufacturing them to suit myself. I'm still not great at it. Laws of the game don't specify anything about how the ball must be dropped. I always used to naturally drop it from chest height - makes life more difficult for yourself to manage it.
(Edit to add, I can't actually see the embedded tweet / video - I'm on a work pc)

Ball is dropped (legally) by the referee, with other players told to move back.
Ball is in play when it touches the ground.
Had the shot entered the goal, the restart would have been a goal kick, as a second player must touch the ball before a goal could be scored.

Regardless of where the ball was dropped from - looks like a correct restart. Distance of opponents etc looks ok.. No real guidance in law as to the height the ball must dropped from. I don't of any ruling stating that the player to whom the ball is dropped has to be the first to play it. The ball is in play when it touches the ground.
Jones looking to the referee with some sort of appeal is farcical. A good example of two professional players and their knowledge of the LOTG (or lack of it).

Could have been a whole lot worse if the shot went in and a goal was awarded !! 🤣

Good drop for me. I'd definitely call it a drop not throw if i see it in a throw in 😉

I actually think the intention was to shield it from Bournemouth getting to it quick rather than forcing liverpool to go backwards.

It seems that Jones thinks oppones are supposed to stay away until he touches it. Daft.

I think the drop ball to the team last in contact with it throws a lot of folk, myself included into thinking that team has to be the one that takes the first touch.

All it means is that team have a player at the dropped ball, with the other 21 players at least 4 metres away until the ball hits the ground.
I have had to remind several referees this season of that need😁

Every day a school day, all 21 players must be 4 metres!

Chaos if that flies in the top corner, & the referee gives a goal kick or worse a goal!
