In an EFL game if a players gets his fifth yellow of the season and then gets a straight red (in the same game) does the yellow go towards the "totting up" procedure or is it a "free" yellow card?

The caution still counts as I understand it. But if a player is sent off for two cautions then neither of these appear on the caution count.

This. The player would get 1 match for the fifth caution, and one, two, three or six matches for the red card.
