The Ref Stop

David Coote leaked video

The Ref Stop
The picture of Milner was just really random. It seems too random for someone doing a deepfake to come up with. Then again, could be a double bluff!

Either way, I don’t think anyone had this on their bingo card this morning

Thing is, i feel like its common knowledge that most PL refs really dont like klopp, or it is from what ive heard other referees in my circle say who’ve got to events where they listen to them speak etc. So its although its just him taking an existing notion wayyy too far, and being off his face at the same time, his case isnt helped by the fact that liverpool are one of the most influential clubs in the league, and theyve already felt aggrieved by him may times, meaning its going to be way too much media pressure for the PGMOL to handle, and they will fully go for the kill. I dont think he can come back from it for that reason

Being reported on twitter that hes suddenly decided it was genuine but has no recollection of the event. Will be interesting to see if this gets reported anywhere else

I'm assuming he means coc-ked up, as in supported. Not coked up, as in off his face on drugs...a simple spelling mistake...I assume

Whatever one thinks of the leaker of this video, or the hypocrisy of the reaction to this criticism of a manager in light of players and managers criticising referees constantly, I cannot envisage that he remains on the PGMOL roster.

When I heard on the radio just now about the video, I anticipated it being a surreptitious recording, but knowingly being filmed saying what he did is a terrible error of judgement that I can't see a way back from, not in this country and/or for a good long while at least. I just really hope the PGMOL are providing him with the support that he needs and I can't help but feel sympathy for him, however stupid he was to do it.
Should get a similar fine to Forest as the wording was similar 😉

But on a more serious note I may have miss heard but I believe he called Klopp a German C**nt which may be a bigger issue

Can we please stop referring to this as a genuine fake. It can be either or. Not both ☺️

If the allegations are true (legal part out of the way) anyone who records themselves or allows being recorded while saying these things deserves anything coming their way. Allegedly, from the vid they even knew it's career ending if it gets out. Being drunk is no excuse.

The biggest issue for me, is that this feeds into fans & clubs conspiracy theories that referees have it in for them. This then filters down from the Premier League, all the way to grassroots. Thus making it that bit more difficult for referees in parks football.

If the video is proven to be genuine, the above will be David Cootes lasting legacy.

Couldn't agree more. As has been said earlier, the issue is that the role fundamentally requires impartiality. This shows prejudice (whether deserved or not) and is expressed in the most extreme way. This in turn is hugely damaging not just for Coote but for the PGMOL and FA more widely, especially given the ongoing rhetoric.

The only thing I would say is, just because someone he has a personal dislike for someone doesn't mean he's not going to do his job properly. I have customers in my day job that I don't particularly like (the way they treat me) but that doesn't stop me from being professional and doing my best for them. However, you are right, we need to be seen as impartial in this role, so he's got to go i'm afraid.

I do wonder if the reaction would be slightly different if he said, he loves Klopp, he's great to have a laugh with on the touchline and that he likes to go to Anfield, would people say he needs to be sacked because that could be interpreted as potentially favouring Liverpool? I say that because as it been mentioned in the post above, just because he doesn't like the manager does not mean he won't be impartial.

Well, the tone would have been different but the unprofessionalism would be the same. In the actual video, these things compound the offence for me, rather than change it.

The reality is that of course none of us, being human, are completely impartial - for example we have bias and prejudice that changes throughout a game for sure, even if it's not conscious, based on the changing context. What this exposes is the openness to express a depth of feeling that publicly calls that impartiality into question. For me, whether he has acted on it or not is largely irrelevant.

And, also as has been mentioned elsewhere, this is precisely why organisations and companies have social media policies, etc. It's not that people (employees, for eg) can't have a political view - or even a racist or misogynistic view - it's that they shouldn't espouse those openly to the public if it will impact on their employer. At it's heart, it's simply a gross misconduct issue.

Exactly ! There are teams I don't like, but I don't referee them any differently

I can't understand why DC or 'his friend' thought putting on video these comments was a good idea. What purpose did it serve?

You would video something to share with someone who wasn't there.

Clearly DC says "this is career ending if this gets out", so delete it there & then!

It's like Russian roulette, having that out there. I suspect 'friend' shared it with a.n. other on WhatsApp as something that is funny, which then got shared again.

If nothing else it questions DC's judgement.

However, I don't see it has done lasting damage to PGMOL & referees. Keep saying it supports the corruption conspiracy theorists is wrong.

Any normal human being as a referee is hardly going to be friends or complimentary of individuals who regularly abuse them on the touchline, to name four Klopp, Arteta, Mourinho, Warnock. But keep your opinion to yourself.

Of course it supports the conspiracy theorists. A quick look in the media and on social media will tell you this. Yes you have to take comments on there with a pinch of salt, but you also have to use it to be able to read the room.

Disliking someone is perfectly fine and natural. But when you are in a position of power, you have to be super careful about what you say and how you say it; they are held to a higher standard. If a police officer came out and said they don't like a certain group of people, there would be riots. That's not to say they would treat those people any different, but it hints towards impartiality. The 2nd video proves that DC knew how much trouble he would be in if the video saw the light of day.

I'm not personally bothered by his comments. As a Liverpool fan, do I think he knowingly gives decisions against us? No. I know how much time and commitment it takes to climb the refereeing ladder. What I don't like is what he has done for every single other referee out there. He has made their jobs 1000 times harder by adding fuel to the conspiracy theorists fires. PGMOL do everything they can to protect the elite referees, which is why they don't let them give post match interviews, as their comments would be twisted. But for DC to say what he did on a video is both stupid and selfish.

I don't even think that his potential sacking is the worst thing that has come out of him doing this, I think it is all the claims from the premier league fans wanting the prem to bring in foreign refs. Because if you shout and scream at the foreign refs they won't grow a negative opinion of players/managers.

I suspect it was something to do with not being in a normal state of mind at the time...

But not the answer and nor should it. It’s fine having the odd one or two like Gillett, but that’s sufficient. Fans want anything they don’t like - they don’t want VAR, they want consistency, they want ex professional players as Referees, but yet …..!!

If the fans want overseas officials in, then I am perfectly happy to go the other way. One in, one out.

How’s the Tuscany Serie Cagna e Anatra getting on for refs?

Pretty sure I’m on record for saying the (long-departed) W******* manager A*** P*** is a complete **** as well 😂

I’ll dust off my passport.
