Game today was an U17 'friendly', Red vs Yellow.
Got to the ground about 30 mins before kick off as couldn't find it.Quick 5 minute prematch with the home coach, he says 'we don't need any cards today ref, I think being a friendly and that we need to tone it down.I tell you what any issues let either me or the away coach know and we'll sub them off. We've only had one card all season'
I told him I need the cards to control the game properly so can't say they won't be used, but if played in the right spirit will keep in my mind it is a friendly and try to manage the situation in other ways if possible.
First half is pretty straightforward, a good fast game with some good play and nothing out of the ordinary.Yellow score 2 in the last 5 mins to go in 0-2 at HT.
Only issue on the pitch is Red 2 who feels the need to kick anybody who goes past him late.Nothing excessive but persistent.I'd told him during play 4 or 5 times in the first half, then 2 more early second. Second time comes with an additional 'next time it's a yellow'.
At the next goal kick I edge towards the coach 'red 2 is very close to a caution' que false amazement from coach who says to red 2 'I don't know what you've said but apparently you're close to a yellow card'.
For the next 5 minutes each time the ball goes out of play I look to the coach expecting to request a sub.Nothing.
Sure enough Red 2 can't resist a kick as somebody goes past him, this time bringing him down. So I bring him over and caution him.
Had to caution Red 3 for a real nasty tackle too, verging on a sending off.
Imagine my lack of surprise when the coach comes over after the game asking not to put them in.
No chance.
