The Ref Stop
Can’t really argue with it, it’s a careless foul (albeit the broadcasters don’t seem to understand that this is standard terminology referees have to use - why they’re arguing with the use of the term I have no idea). People either want VAR or they don’t. If you don’t want fouls like that to be picked up, you have to do away with it altogether.

Not for me. Think the commentator made a good point - "The game isn't played in slow motion". I just think he's turning so what else is he meant to do?

Not sure Rob Jones is having an overly great game so far.

• Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed

A careless foul can't be any more textbook than that. Had he showen attention or consideration he wouldn't have stepped on the oppoent's foot.

But did he put his foot on top of his opponents or did the opponent put his underneath? And if it was so textbook as you describe it was it missed in real time by an official with an unobstructed view from around 6m away?

I totally agree that it is a careless foul and the decision to rule it out is correct.

I usually don't get so worked up about commentators but they've really irritated me with their thoughts, especially the co-commentator who went as far as saying RJ must have "misspoke when he described it as careless - it wasn't careless".

Is it too much to ask for commentators to learn even the basics?!

I think the answer to that is yes. Josh Smith cautioned a Leicester defender yesterday for what he considered was a reckless challenge, though if VAR was in place - it would have been a likely red. I have no issue with the yellow in real time.

That was bad last night. I'm slightly shocked he didn't see it in real-time

We have gone off topic which is my fault, but are you really saying that when you first saw it in real time you knew it was a red?

As an analogy, "he faced my fist" is not a good defence line in court when charged with punching someone 😆

For your other point, there is a distinct difference between something being textbook, and somthing being clear. That's why we have VAR, because officials miss clear fouls etc, otherwise we don't need VAR.

It lookes very very bad yes first time because I could see how far his leg was off the ground. Couldn't see point of contact straight away but I would've hoped Josh wouldve been in a better position than us to see.

Sydie Peck made a horrendous challenge in the Boro vs Southampton game today. I was in a pub full of Sheff U fans and they all winced and thought he was off, VAR would have 100% recommended a review. And this is the problem, people want VAR when a red card is missed but then don’t want VAR when a goal is disallowed.

What is clear and obvious?

Ref is literally looking right at it from a few meters.

What has he missed that was right in front of him?

Attacker is making an action to play the ball, ref has seen the same, play on. Football is a contact sport after all

Making his body bigger. That’s a penalty as IFAB intended.

I just think as football fans we do really need to hear the process going on.

Either the referees seen it and decided its not a foul or hes missed it. That's going to play a massive part whether VAR intervenes or not.

Yeah - definitely pen. Feel for the players - as it is hard not to handle in these situations.

Have said this all along - it’s the way it is going.
