Two penalties for Josh Smith, FWIW I can't see what he got wrong, gives first waves away the second.

Keith Hackett scathing, who'd be a PGMOL official?

The Ref Stop
The first was obviously accidental, but he has flown through the air with a lot of speed and really could have caused serious damage there. I sympathise as a former defender, but I can see why it was given as a penalty. Second one is totally different, the arm wasn't that high, didn't swing and the contact was minimal. Had the 1st one not been given then I very much doubt there would have been any debate about the 2nd.

Hackett is a clown and people should stop giving him a platform on which to continually embarrass himself. He's an 80 year old man, hasn't refereed for over 30 years, and the select group was a disaster under his management. He has absolutely zero credibility. Has he ever actually agreed with a refereeing decision, his opinion is almost always the polar opposite to what was awarded?

I don't think I've ever seen him agree. He is always, ALWAYS, defending the players.
The game has completely changed since when he refereed or was involved in the actual match day events.

As for this game..
Im not sold on the first one. I mean, the defender coming from a few yards and heading him is a foul. But the attacker eas literally climbing all over and preventing the other defender from jumping for the same ball. Doing this meant that actually the impact was worse by the other incoming defender. That's not to justify the defender heading him but it's a consideration.
I think the attacker fouled the defender first.

Although I’m not touching on the original subject, why is it considered KH was a disaster as the Select Group Manager? He considers he was doing a good job and should never have been replaced by Mike Reilly who he is very bitter over (even to this day - wasn’t MR fault he replaced KH).

I’d be bitter if I was replaced by Mike Riley

For starters he presided over the demotion / sacking of three SG1 referees, two of which had to be reinstated because correct procedures had not been followed, and the other won his appeal against the dismissal. The get out for Keith Stroud and Steve Tanner was that monthly reviews hadn't been carried out as required per their contracts, that's just absolute basics and far more incompetent than any of the refereeing decisions he regularly criticises.

Rob Styles had resigned not long before, citing lack of support from PGMOL and The FA.

I'm also old enough to remember Hackett refereeing, he might have somehow got on the FIFA list but he really wasn't very good. He waddled around the pitch like a fat duck, but now deems it appropriate for him to criticise referees' fitness levels, it really is hypocrisy of the very highest order.

I quite liked Rob Styles Refereeing.

Having given the first PK, he should have awarded the second as there were some similarities
I think that would have been the most supportable combination of decisions and the best overall outcome

I echo the views on Hackett, not that the management of Riley was a vast improvement.

The first penalty is unorthodox but a careless challenge nevertheless. I cannot agree with the second one but at least the defender will learn to position his arms in a way so as to not given an official a decision to make.
